Five Points has the distinction of being the neighborhood that forms Detroit’s northwestern corner, with suburban Southfield to the north and Redford Charter Township to the west. And although it’s still part of the city, the streets of Five Points have a very suburban feel thanks to their abundance of sidewalks and trees.
Located 15 miles from downtown Detroit, Five Points is named for the so-called five-pointed intersection of Seven Mile Road, Grand River Avenue and Five Points Street. “This is a good outer-area community,” says Realtor Tami Jo Schuetzler of The Signature Group. “You’ve got some really affordable homes, mostly ranch homes and bungalows, and it’s close to the expressways.” Residents can access I-96 to downtown from Telegraph Road, or travel across Detroit’s northern boundary via Eight Mile Road. Detroit Department of Transportation buses have multiple stops along Seven Mile Rd., Eight Mile Rd. and Grand River Ave.
The median price of a Five Points home is about $80,000 less than those just a few blocks away in Redford Township. “You can get a well-built, brick ranch home for under $100,000,” Schuetzler says. “It’s a good, solid price point.” Five Points homes tend to be brick ranches or vinyl-sided bungalows around 1,000 square feet. Prices range from $55,000 to around $180,000. Neighborhood fixer-uppers can sell for $30,000 or less.
Five Points is primarily residential but does have a handful of shopping and dining choices. Customers at Obama Fresh Fish and Seafood can purchase fresh seafood or poultry to make at home, or order it fried in-house. Demi’s Restaurant and Bar features live entertainment and hosts a monthly Corvette Night in the parking lot. Just a few blocks from the neighborhood, The Smackin’ offers eclectic choices like lobster grilled cheese and seafood egg rolls, as well as wings served by the pound with a choice of eight house-made glazes and sauces. For grocery shopping, Aldi and Spartan Foods are just outside the neighborhood in Redford Township. Darou Salam African Market is another nearby option on Seven Mile Rd.
Fargo-Fenton Playground – located at the corner of Fargo and Fenton Streets – features a pair of play areas under the shade of dozens of tall oaks, as well as a walking path that circles around the park’s border. There is also a small playground with a little library on a former Lenore Ave. Lot that has been converted into a neighborhood park space. Nearby Grand Lawn Cemetery, which covers 175 acres along the Rouge River, is also utilized by area walkers.
One of the neighborhood's most notable landmarks is its empty school. The former Detroit Open School was one of 195 Detroit Public Schools closed between 2000-2015. The abandoned building is owned by the city, which is actively shopping the property to potential residential developers. Five Points students may attend the nearby Charles Wright Academy of Arts and Science. With a B-rating on Niche, this K-8 school with a focus on the performing arts is ranked as the No. 4 standout middle school in the Detroit area. Communications and Media Arts High School, a public magnet school emphasizing communications and media, is the nearest high school. It has a C-rating. Neighborhood residents might also attend Madison-Carver Academy, a K-8 charter school with a C-rating, or Emerson Elementary-Middle School, a K-8 Detroit Public School with a C-minus rating. Henry Ford High, which has nearly quadrupled in enrollment since 2018, also serves Five Points students. Ford has a C-minus on Niche.
Churches play an important role in Five Points culture. New St. Mark Baptist Church has welcomed parishioners to its Eight Mile Rd. location for decades. The adjoining Abayomi Community Development Corporation serves the entire Five Points and Northwest Detroit community. Abayomi offers youth and family services, homeowner education programs, and financial literacy programs. One of Detroit’s largest churches is also near Five Points. Greater Grace Temple, an Apolistic Pentecostal church with 6,000 members, has a sprawling campus just outside the neighborhood on Seven Mile Road.
