The Joy Community offers expansive parks and is close to downtown Detroit.
Friendly neighbors and events in Joy Community
The Joy Community is filled with single-family homes, places of worship and a large park, all 13 miles away from Downtown Detroit. “The area is very neighborly. The people all know each other,” says Marliesha Darnell, a Realtor with eXp Realty who works in the area. “Everyone is tight-knit in the neighborhood, and they’re all very nice.” Residents can visit popular food chains like Captain Jay’s Fish & Chicken along Greenfield Rd. Parents might take their kids to Edison Detroit Public Library for storytime or to run around Stoepel Park Number 2. Local non-profits continue to support Joy Community residents with events like the Sowing Seeds Growing Future farmers market and clothing swap.

Farmers market and clothing swap with JSCDC
Every Tuesday in June through October, residents visit the Joy-Southfield Community Development Corporation (JSCDC) building for the Sowing Seeds Growing Futures farmers market and clothing swap. Local vendors sign up to sell fresh produce, handmade goods and boutique items. Residents can also volunteer with the JSCDC to help their neighbors enjoy the annual event.
Brick bungalow homes are prominent in the Joy Community.
Residents choose brick bungalows with bay windows
Residents return home from work or school and relax in their brick bungalow homes. Some feature front bay windows, but almost all have limited yard space, uncovered parking and concrete steps leading up to the front door. Darnell says affordability is one of the reasons homebuyers choose Joy Community. “You can get a good house for $100,000. So it’s affordable, and it’s in a nice area of Detroit,” she says. Home prices often range from $35,000 to $150,000. Future homeowners can find multiple options, but renters can also find their spot in the neighborhood. Nearly half of Joy Community residents own their properties. Experienced Realtor Tamara Dixon with Real Estate One-Novi, who has sold homes in the area, says, “There’s a little of both” when it comes to investors and homeowners buying property. She also says she’s seen some new construction going on in the community.

Stein Park playground is also nearby next to Cody High School. Kids can hang out on the playground equipment or dog walkers can get their steps in using the paved trails.
Captain Jays Fish and Chicken
Heading down Greenfield Road for lunch
Residents can grab lunch at Captain Jay’s Fish and Chicken. The restaurant began in Detroit and now has more than 20 locations in Michigan. In addition to its prepared foods, the restaurant is famous for its “You buy, we fry” deal, where customers can buy fresh meat and seafood and have it fried by the restaurant. Hungry locals can also drive down Greenfield Road to get a slice at Fire Pizza Detroit or try Lebanese dishes at Khalaf Grill on West Warren Avenue. Those who want to stock up on groceries take a trip to US Quality Foods Supermarket, a locally owned store at the corner of Joy Road and Greenfield Road. When residents want to spend time at the mall, they visit the Fairlane Town Center.
