LaSalle Gardens is full of Detroit culture. Aretha Franklin’s childhood home is still located at the corner of LaSalle Boulevard and Lothrop Street. While it is a private residence, it’s still a pilgrimage stop for music lovers. New Bethel Baptist Church, where The Queen of Soul spent Sunday mornings singing in the choir, still stands on the corner of Linwood and Euclid. Once the center of Detroit's civil rights movement, New Bethel is still involved in the community through charity and education initiatives. LaSalle Park and Joseph Walker Williams Recreation Center
The neighborhood is centered around the nearly 4-and-a-half-acre LaSalle Park. This green space features English-style gardens and an abundance of trees, providing a scenic, shaded setting for picnics and reading. Joseph Walker Williams Recreation Center is just north of LaSalle Gardens and offers indoor and outdoor recreation options. The playground and splash pad are popular during warm summer days, while the rec center is open year-round and has been around for over 40 years. Housing in LaSalle Gardens ranges from duplexes and more modest homes to larger, gated estates. Most streets are lined with Dutch Colonial, Four-Square and bungalow architecture alongside empty lots. These homes sell between $25,000 and $150,000 depending on the size, level of renovations done and year built. Most do not feature garages, so on-street parking is common.
On the other hand, LaSalle Park is surrounded by stately homes from the early 1900s. Colonial Revival, English Revival, and American Four Squares are the most common architectural styles. Many homes include driveways leading to backyard garages. The neighborhood’s longstanding history shows through the mature trees which create a canopy of greenery. The paved sidewalks below allow for easy morning strolls. The houses around the park typically sell between $200,000 and $400,000. Growth in this community stems mostly from the welcoming range of home prices. “New buyers are setting the market price; refurbished homes can be talked down to $250,000,” says Basa.

Where LaSalle Gardens residents shop and dine
LaSalle Gardens is primarily residential but there are several shopping and dining options nearby. Family Foods Super Store is a short walk from the neighborhood. The newly renovated store is well known for its competitive prices, attracting shoppers from a variety of surrounding neighborhoods.
While there aren’t many restaurants in the area, there are a few options on the Boulevard — from chains like KFC to local favorites like Papa's Pizza & BBQ. The pizza joint is a local chain known for its fall-off-the-bone rib tips and Detroit-style deep dish. The Congregation Detroit sits on Rosa Parks Boulevard and has become a city staple in recent years. Run out of a church building with over 100 years of history, the Eater Award-winning coffee shop hosts several events throughout the year including a farmer's market, comedy shows and small concerts.

Buses, I-96 and The Lodge

The neighborhood is also just 2 miles east of Interstate 96 and 2 miles west of The Lodge, meaning residents have direct access to main freeways without dealing with the noise.

LaSalle Gardens’ students attend nearby schools like Thirkell Elementary-Middle for kindergarten through eighth grade and Northwestern High School, both of which have C-minus ratings on Niche.
