Why Live in Douglass

Douglass Township covers a large swath of Berks County, with the north and south ends of this rural community possessing their own characteristics. The northern half predominantly features older homes, some dating to the early 1900s, as well as local businesses, while the south end has a lot of newer houses and shopping centers. "Housing here is very affordable, and there's easy access to highways." says Regina McLaughlin Williams, broker/owner for RE/MAX Synergy, who’s lived in the area for 18 years. Homes from the 1900s and 2000s are along winding country roads with an average lot size of an acre. "Because it's so rural, there is no access to public sewers, so homes need larger yard space for installing a septic system," Williams says. Home styles and sizes vary depending upon the location and year built. Many of the older homes are farmhouses, Cape Cods or ranch-styles, while newer houses are mostly colonial revivals. Homes typically sell for $200,000 to $600,000. Douglass Village is a 55-plus area with manufactured homes from the 2000s that usually go for $200,000 to $300,000. The CAP Index gives Douglass a crime score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
