Suburban living in a small town
Dumont is a residential borough whose sidewalk-lined streets and cul-de-sacs cover just 2 square miles. “It being a small town, my kids would ride bicycles to go see their friends, and I did that as a kid too,” says Lori Courtney, a Realtor with McSpirit and Beckett Real Estate and a third-generation resident. “You have a lot of people like me called lifers, who grew up in the town and stayed.” In the northeastern corner of New Jersey, the town is about 5 miles or 15 minutes from the nearest highway, but still only 18 miles from Midtown Manhattan. Off the beaten path, the community attracts homebuyers looking for a slower pace of life. “It’s got a little old-world charm in that we try to keep an eye out for each other,” says Maureen McSpirit, a Broker with McSpirit and Beckett Real Estate.
Grocery stores and local spots
Residents can pick up groceries at Stop & Shop, the largest supermarket in the borough. Locals also gather around Washington and Madison Avenues, which intersect in the heart of the community and boast a charming collection of restaurants. Favorites for dining include long-standing and family-owned spots such as the Dumont Crystal Diner, which has been serving comfort foods for breakfast and lunch since the 1920s, and Grant Street Café. A cozy bar with wooden booths, Grant’s is known for its thin-crust pizzas topped with everything from pepperoni to filet mignon, which it has been serving for over 75 years. “This town is generational, and that’s telling. People are very happy, no one’s looking to move elsewhere,” says McSpirit.

Community festivities at the park
The community gathers at Veterans Memorial Park for several annual events. Each fall, the town celebrates Dumont Day at the park with local food vendors, live music, games and more. The borough also holds seasonal events such as a Winter Festival, Memorial Day Parade and Halloween Festival.
Single-family homes with modest lots
Dumont has become a popular destination for homebuyers hoping to stay close to New York City. “Because of the price point and the proximity to the city, the market is good,” says McSpirit. “If a home is competitively priced, it will go for full price or above.” Homebuyers will find a variety of single-family homes, with ranch-style homes, split-levels, colonial revivals and Cape Cods nestled side-by-side on modest lots. Three-bedroom split-level homes built in the 1950s feature attached garages and small patios, with prices starting at around $490,000. Homebuyers looking for more room can find four-bedroom colonial revivals built in the early 1900s with hardwood floors, front porches and detached garages for around $450,0000 to $640,000, with the price increasing with the number of renovations done to the home.
Top-rated schools in Dumont
Children attend the Dumont Public School District, which earned an A-minus from Niche and has an average student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. Younger kids in grades K-8 may attend the Selzer School, one of several elementary-middle schools in the area, while teens attend Dumont High School. The high school offers students the opportunity to participate in Option Two, a program in which they can earn academic credit through independent study, dual enrollment programs, internships and volunteer projects. Both schools earned an A-minus from Niche.
Community parks and nearby country club
With 12 parks scattered throughout the borough, green spaces in Dumont are abundant. Veterans Memorial Park is a focal point for the community, with tennis courts, ballfields, basketball courts and a playground for kids to explore. The park’s ballfields are also home to the Dumont Little League. Residents are about 2 miles from the nearby White Beeches Golf and Country Club, where members enjoy access to the club’s 18-hole golf course, tennis courts and outdoor pool.

Commuting to New York City
While Dumont feels wonderfully secluded, the borough is about 22 miles from New York City and 5 miles from major thoroughfares such as the Garden State Parkway and Palisades Interstate Parkway. For those looking to commute, the New Jersey Transit bus stops along Washington Avenue and connects residents to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.
A rich history
In 1917, Camp Merritt was established in Dumont and quickly became one of the largest embarkation camps used in World War I. While most of the barracks for Camp Merritt were torn down after the war, the Camp Merritt Memorial stands today in the southeastern corner of town.
