Northeastern Durham offers residents direct routes to downtown, nature preserves and jobs in the Research Triangle Park. "It's been a large production of developers buying land and doing new neighborhoods," says Mike Strayhorn, a Realtor and broker with Long & Foster Real Estate who has been selling homes in the area since 1985. "The prognosis is very good. ... Historically it's been a great location for medical people who work at Duke." Townhouses in communities like Glenn Crossing can sell in the upper $200,000s to lower $400,000s. Single-family homes across the area have ranch-style, Craftsman or New Traditional designs and range in the lower $100,000s to upper $500,000s. Older homes, built between 1910 and 2000, tend to have larger lots and no HOA fees. Newer builds are usually in HOA-managed neighborhoods that come with monthly fees. “It’s a good market,” says Matt Lees, a Realtor with Realty Raleigh, who has been selling homes in the area for six years. “It’s a great location. Research Triangle Park isn’t far from there. There are also universities and medical training hospitals. It’s a fantastic market for short-term rentals because there’s so much nearby.”
You can get groceries at the nearby Walmart, which is in the same center as the Taqueria Jalisco, a popular Mexican restaurant. Another local favorite is Byrd's BBQ Restaurant & Catering, where you can order Southern comfort food for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Residents here are a part of the highly rated Durham Public Schools district, where kids might go to Sandy Ridge Elementary School or the School for Creative Studies. The area is also about 12 miles from Duke University, one of the top private colleges in North Carolina.
Northeast Durham is full of green spaces you can explore. “You don’t have to travel very far to feel like you can get out in nature,” Lee says. “That’s appealing to a lot of people.” Falls Lake flows along the area’s northern border, and the Eno River cuts through the community. You can launch a canoe or kayak onto the water at the Hickory Hill Boat Ramp or the Eno River Boat Launch. Part of North Carolina’s 1,200-mile Mountains-To-Sea Trail extends through Northeast Durham, and it’s a scenic hiking trail that has views of the lake and river along the way. Interstate 85 runs directly through the neighborhood, so it's easy for residents to get around the city in less than 20 minutes with easy traffic. Depending on where you live, downtown is about 7 miles away. The interstate leads commuters about 12 miles to Duke University, while the Interstate 885 connector offers a straight 13-mile path to the Research Triangle Park, the largest research park in the country. Northeast Durham is also close to the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, making it easy for commuters who need to fly to local destinations like Charlotte to overseas cities like Paris, France.
