Old North Durham has offered convenience since it was founded
Old North Durham is true to its name. The neighborhood is one of the oldest in downtown Durham, and some homes were built as early as the late 1800s. Residents who live here want a house with character, as well as quick commutes to job hubs like Duke University, the Research Triangle Park and Duke Regional Hospital. You’re also moments from City Center's breweries, restaurants and entertainment destinations.

Older homes that still have their charm
In the neighborhood, sidewalks lead past older Craftsman homes, bungalows and split-levels. “You’ll notice Old North is closer to downtown,” says Brooks Brittingham, a broker and Realtor on the Cornerstone Realty Team with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “When the city was forming, development started close to downtown. Old North is lots of housing from the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s.”
Homes usually have a pathway from the sidewalk to the front door and driveways instead of garages. Properties that could use some renovations might sell in the lower $200,000 to $400,000 range, while those that have been renovated can range from the lower $500,000s to the lower $900,000s. Homes built in the last decade and historic properties with extensive updates can sell in the upper $900,000s to a little over $1 million.

Residents can walk around the neighborhood and bike to downtown, but it’s also easy to drive to work. “Duke is our biggest employer in Durham, on both the medical and university side,” Brittingham says. “Someone who wants easy access yet also a house and neighborhood with access to amenities will move there.” Old North Durham is closest to Duke’s East Campus, and the West Campus is about 2 miles away, with the Duke University Hospital. Commuters can use the Durham Freeway to drive 9 miles to jobs in the Research Triangle Park and Interstate 40 to reach the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Downtown dining minutes from home
Old North Durham is a residential area, but residents are steps away from Central Park and City Center, two hot spots for breweries, restaurants and bars. You might visit:
The Blue Note Grill to try hickory-smoked barbecue and catch some live music.
King’s Sandwich Shop to order at a historic restaurant that opened in 1942.
Boxcar Bar + Arcade to get a drink and play classic games like pinball.
Downtown’s Main Street is lined with vintage stores and boutiques. “The uniqueness of the downtown Durham area is kind of what the biggest draw is,” Brittingham says. “You could be dropped into the middle of downtown, and it’s the only place that looks like that. It's maintained a lot of the chain restaurants and all that, but it’s much more of a mom-and-pop feel. About 70% of the businesses were started by Durham people. It has an entrepreneurial spirit.” You might get groceries at the nearby Super Compare Foods or fresh produce from the Durham Farmers’ Market near Central Park.
