You'll find an assortment of housing options for sale, but there are also rental options, from townhouses to apartments in complexes like Beckon and Foster on the Park. "You have a huge range of housing types,” says Tim Hock, Realtor and owner of Tim Hock Properties based in Durham. “There are condos, townhomes, 100-year-old homes and brand-new single-family homes.” Condo units with around 1,000 square feet that sell in the lower $200,000s to $500,000s. Those with more than 1,000 square feet might sell in the lower $700,000s to nearly $2 million range. The east half of the community has more single-family homes, from bungalows that sell in the lower $300,000s to upper $500,000s to Craftsmans that go in the lower $600,000s to upper $900,000s.

Try walking to shops, boutiques and destinations
The community and much of Durham are full of restaurants, from breweries and coffee shops to bars and sit-down diners. "You can walk to the farmers market and do your weekly shopping,” Hock says. “The number of restaurants in Durham itself is phenomenal, and most of them are quite good. You would be walking for coffee or dinner, or music and entertainment. The Durham Food Hall features 10 restaurants, two bars and plenty of space for parties. You can get your morning coffee at Cocoa Cinnamon and catch up with friends at Bull City Burger and Brewery. For groceries, Bulldega Urban Market offers gourmet ingredients, but there’s also a Harris Teeter and a Whole Foods Market about 2 miles away. Boutiques line West Main Street in City Center, but when you need more of a selection, there’s a Target about 5 miles away or a roughly 15-minute drive with light traffic.

Walking, biking and driving around town
Central Park is made for people who like to walk along paved sidewalks shaded by tall oak trees. “It's terribly convenient,” Hock says. “I’ve lived in that area since 1996. You’re very close to major highways, like the Durham Freeway and Interstate 85, but also it’s so walkable that you tend to walk or bike a lot. I think that’s what people like.” Raleigh is about 25 miles away using the freeway, but the Raleigh-Durham International Airport is closer, about 14 miles away. GoDurham buses make stops in the area, and Amtrak’s Durham Station is located a few blocks south on Main Street

Where you can take your dog for a day out
Having wide sidewalks means it easy to take your dog out for a walk, either to see what’s for sale at the Durham Farmers’ Market or visit pet-friendly shops, like Vessel Coffee House & Art Cafe. Locals bring their dogs to walk around Durham Central Park, but there’s also a playground called Mount Merrill, a skate park and a wide-open lawn for the many festivals held in the park throughout the year.
