East Grand Rapids has come a long way since its days as an amusement hub. Previously home to the popular Ramona Park, which surrounded Reeds Lake between 1881 and 1955, this suburban city is now well-known as a “charming, walkable community, with very highly rated schools,” says Donna Anders, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, who has more than 30 years of experience selling in West Michigan. “They’re almost all vintage homes, which adds to the beautiful charm of the area. Both of my sons live there, and they absolutely love it,” she says. Although not technically part of the city of Grand Rapids, East Grand Rapids sits just a few miles from all the museums, galleries, parks and restaurants that make downtown Grand Rapids popular. Public transportation options make it easy to reach major employers with or without a car, and local shopping centers such as Gaslight Village and Breton Village ensure residents are never far from what they need.

East Grand Rapids offers Lakeside living and condo comfort
Because of its size, East Grand Rapids features an eclectic mix of housing options, from Georgian condos to custom lakeshore estates. Styles include everything from Colonial Revival to traditional ranch to classic Craftsman, and a small collection of historical Tudor Revival homes bring a touch of architectural elegance to the streets. Buyers can expect housing prices to vary drastically depending on location, size and age, with the most expensive, million-dollar properties lining Reeds Lake and including private docks. Two-bedroom condos usually sell under $400,000, while four-bedroom single-family homes can range from $550,000 to $700,000. Homebuyers should be aware, however, that East Grand Rapids has “the highest tax rate for property taxes,” Anders says, although she notes that “people do still move there because they love the walkability and the vintage homes.”

Educating state champions at East Grand Rapids High
As part of the East Grand Rapids Public School District, students benefit from attending some of the highest rated schools in the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. Young students can attend Breton Downs Elementary or Lakeside Elementary before moving on to East Grand Rapids Middle, all of which maintain grades of A on Niche. At East Grand Rapids High, an IB World School that also proudly boasts an A on Niche, athletes can play on state championship-winning lacrosse, swim and crew teams. With nearly 150 state championships in the school’s history, it’s one of the most decorated athletic departments in the area.

The historic draw of Reeds Lake
Once the centerpiece of the buzzing Ramona Park amusement complex, Reeds Lake now serves as a relaxing summer boating and winter skating destination surrounded by nearly 4 miles of paved trails and a scenic wooden boardwalk. Waterfront Park and John Collins Park sit on the western lakeshore, offering landscaped picnic areas and public boat and canoe launches. East Grand Rapids Community Center provides a host of indoor recreation options just a few blocks south. Northeast of the lake, Manhattan Park draws visitors for playdates, impromptu volleyball games and baseball practices. Local shopping at Gaslight Village
The walkable Gaslight Village offers a quaint collection of local shops and restaurants just west of Reeds Lake, including new and creative establishments like the Mexican-Polish fusion joint José Babushka's. The village also includes a Rite Aid pharmacy and grocery options such as D&W Fresh Market. Up Lakeside Drive, Rose’s stands as the last remaining structure from the bygone days of Ramona Park. Established in 1901, this locally owned restaurant offers Mediterranean, Italian and American fusion fare, traditional favorites like Rose’s original burger recipe and carnival-style caramel corn — a nostalgic treat for longtime residents. Locals say meals are best enjoyed on the patio with a lakeside view of Rose’s private marina. About 2 miles south, Breton Village shopping mall features upscale retailers such as Lululemon and West Elm, and many residents frequent the Fresh Thyme Market across the street.

For 40 years, athletes have gathered in East Grand Rapids for the Rhoades McKee Reeds Lake Triathlon, which takes place along the lake’s trail in September.
