A small town that's big on nature
Aptly dubbed “The Land of Two Rivers,” Eden, North Carolina residents often describe their Rockingham County city as a small town with big outdoors. Eden is known for its captivating natural landscapes, from the serene waterways of the Dan and Smith rivers and Matrimony Creek to the lush forests of Mayo River State Park. With 15,000 residents, Eden is small compared to neighboring cities like Winston-Salem and Greensboro, each home to 200,000 people; however, Eden residents love its small-town, familial feel and the warmth of belonging to a close-knit community. “The people here are our best asset,” says Cindy Adams, the City of Eden’s Marketing & Special Events Manager. “We roll out the red carpet for everyone, both visitors and locals.”

Three cities became one
Back in the late 1800s, the cities of Leakesville, Spray and Draper were thriving manufacturing hubs in Rockingham County; in 1967, they merged to streamline economic development, becoming what’s now known as the city of Eden. Historic, well-preserved Victorian and Colonial Revival-style homes can still be found in the original Leakesville area, while 2020s ranch-style homes are still being built in the Meadow Summit neighborhood. Throughout Eden, prices range from $60,000 for a three-bed, three-bath home to $390,000 for a five-bed, five-bath version.

County schools with good athletics
Kids can attend Rockingham County district schools like Central Elementary and J.E. Holmes Middle, each of which earns a B-minus from Niche. John Motley Morehead High, which earns a C-plus, serves students from the Central, Douglass, Draper and Leakesville-Spray zone communities and offers a strong basketball program.

Waterfront activities for cooling off
Four miles from Uptown Eden, 58-acre Freedom Park is popular for its horseshoe courts, amphitheater and skatepark; local kids head to the park’s splash pad to beat the summer heat. The Mayo River State Park is great for fishing, while the Dan and Smith rivers are local hubs for kayaking, tubing and canoeing (though the Dan is generally warmer). The two rivers can be accessed via the Island Ford Landing, the Draper Landing and the Smith River Greenway.

Updates in Uptown
Recently revitalized, Uptown Eden is a walkable historic district full of specialty boutiques and independent eateries. The area harmoniously blends newer businesses like the lively Uptown Tavern sports bar, and longstanding ones like The Front Porch, a brick-and-mortar clothing store. Residents can try innovative specialty dishes like whiskey-and-peach-sauce tacos at That Little Pork Shop, a local favorite.

Celebrating the city's heritage
Hosted in the historic Leakesville District each fall, Eden’s annual RiverFest is a beloved town-wide tradition that celebrates the city’s art and history, and the heritage of the Dan River. Folks of all ages gather to celebrate the city with games, magicians and plenty of festival foods.
Bus lines leading all over
The Rockingham County Skat transit system serves residents in Eden, Reidsville, Wentworth, and Western Rockingham, with stops that include the area YMCA, Kingsway Plaza and the Meadow Greens Shopping Center. Major highways that travel through Eden include US Routes 29 and 311.
Big changes coming through a city grant
In January 2023, the City of Eden was given a $1.5 million grant by the EDA to renovate the sewer treatment facility for Nestle Purina PetCare, who will use it to produce pet food and ensure reliable water service in the area. Eden's sewage system has been a longstanding struggle for the community, but city leaders are optimistic that this refurbished facility will create new jobs and attract new residents to Eden.
