A downtown neighborhood with a suburban feel
Downtown Homestead looks more suburban than a typical “downtown” neighborhood. Commercial businesses along major thoroughfares are spread out and best accessed by car. Public transportation is limited to a handful of bus stops. Most homes are single-family builds with front and backyards. “People living there aren’t really looking for a traditional ‘downtown’ experience. They’re drawn to that area because of all the things to do,” says Michael Valencia, a Realtor with Lamacchia Realty who sells throughout South Florida. Those things to do include a state-of-the-art library that opened in 2021 and a huge entertainment complex that opened in 2019 that includes an IMAX theater, bowling alley and barcade. This investment in the city, which tends to be troubled by crime, has breathed new life into the area, which sits in the southernmost part of Miami-Dade County.

Ranch-style and contemporary houses are plentiful
While most residents are renters—about 74%— Downtown Homestead has many streets lined with single-family homes, giving it a less dense feel for a downtown area. Some small apartment complexes and duplexes can be found throughout the community, too. Of the single-family homes, most are midcentury-era ranch-style and custom contemporary builds from the early 2000s. They feature anywhere from two to four bedrooms and sit close on lawns adorned with small palm trees, shrubs and flowers. Many homes feature low fences, and some homes have security bars on windows and doors. Prices range from $240,000 to $535,000. New townhouses are also available, ranging from $370,000 for three bedrooms to $515,000 for four bedrooms.

Many things to do inside and outside
For a day outdoors, residents head to Losner Park, which offers a shaded, ADA-accessible playground for young kids, a jogging and walking path, and is pet-friendly, so locals are often out walking their dogs. On game nights, locals head to Harris Field Park, home to the New Homestead Little League, to cheer on the kids. The park also offers a basketball court, soccer fields and the Sally Woods Barn Pavilion, a popular location of wedding receptions and birthdays.
For indoor activities, the Cybrarium, which blends cutting-edge technology with traditional library services, is conveniently located in the neighborhood. It opened in 2021 and offers resources, including a makers' space with a 3D printer and VR equipment. Another favorite spot among residents is Homestead Station, a large entertainment hub located off South Krome Avenue. It opened in 2019 and boasts an IMAX theatre, a bowling alley and an arcade featuring a full bar.
Nature lovers have easy access to Biscayne National Park and Everglades National Park from the neighborhood. Residents can take advantage of the city’s new program offering trolley service to both parks. The service is free (though reservations are strongly suggested), and riders pick up the trolley at Homestead Station.
