Diverse area with quick access to Downtown Trenton
North of the Pennsylvania and New Jersey border lies the North Trenton community. Locals have access to Polish, Dominican, African and Chinese restaurants, all located within the neighborhood. But when locals want to dine out or visit a museum in Downtown Trenton, they can be there in a short 3-mile drive. Residents of all ages can get some fresh air at local parks like Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Paved sidewalks wind throughout the neighborhood, giving locals a path for biking or walking to corner stores or restaurants. “People move to the area because of the access to Route 1, popular food spots and the quiet streets. I’ve been told people feel safe with all the law enforcement and city workers who live here,” says Enid Gilmore, the property manager at The Village at Lambert Green who has worked in the area since 2015.
Semi-attached and detached options for renters and owners
North Trenton's streets primarily feature detached and semi-detached properties, says Fareeda Stokes, a Realtor broker-owner of Harkes Realty & Associates. Some homes have undergone renovations, while others are ready for renovations. Stokes says Trenton's housing prices are a big draw for new residents. In the early days of the COVID pandemic, Stokes saw a lot of North New Jersey and Philadelphia residents migrating to the North Trenton area. "They were paying high rent prices and realized they could come here and get more house for their money and own instead of rent," Stokes says. Prices do depend on location, condition and amenities, though, Stokes says. "Within the last year, over 1,200 properties sold for as low as $8,000 and as high as $530,000," Stokes says. Most locals rent their homes, but there are opportunities to buy. In North Trenton, future residents can find a four-bedroom "handyman special" attached home for about $60,000 or a recently renovated three-bedroom semi-detached unit for about $300,000. Because these homes sit flush against the paved sidewalks, residents park on the streets. The side streets can get tight, but drivers have more space on major roads, even with street parking.
Graduating from Trenton Central High School
Kids often start learning at Martin Luther Jr. Middle School. The school offers kindergarten through eighth-grade classes and receives a D-plus from Niche. Teens attend Trenton's Ninth Grade Academy before moving on to Trenton Central High School for sophomore through senior years. Niche reports the school has a 13 to 1 student-teacher ratio, and they give Trenton Central High a C.
Walking around Hamnett park with babies and pups
When the sun is shining, locals get outside and head to one of the neighborhood parks in North Trenton. “Hamnett Park is down Ohio Avenue and was just renovated. It’s great for moms who want to get out of the house and walk around with their kids or to visit the dog park,” Gilmore says. Martin Luther King Jr. Park gets busy in the spring with Little League games, but visitors can stop by to play a pickup game on the basketball court or cool off in the summer heat at the community pool. At the former Father Rocco Park, the Capital City Sports Complex has a football field, soccer field, stadium seating and a pool.
Enjoying Polish, Dominican or African dishes
Residents who need to stock up on groceries might visit the Save A Lot in the Capitol Plaza center. After getting groceries, shoppers can go next door to dd’s Discounts or Dollar Tree. When locals want to dine out for dinner, they don’t have to drive into Downtown Trenton to find unique restaurants. "There is a diversified culture here. In terms of food, there are a number of options to choose from during a night on the town," Stokes says. Some order the jerk chicken platter and oxtail from Brunswick Deli & Dr. Bird Jamaican Restaurant. The Dubai Restaurant & Bar serves Dominican dishes and a relaxing space to unwind after work. Gilmore also recommends Cafe 72 in Ewing for brunch and the perogies from Galicja Lounge & Restaurant.
Flea markets and farmers markets in North Trenton
The Trenton Punk Rock Flea Market happens three times a year at the CURE Insurance Arena. Food trucks, special guests, tattoo artists and artists from across the country gather for a rocking time. The Halo Farm gets busy during the spring and summer with fun events and farmers markets Gilmore says.
Taking Route 1 to downtown
North Trenton residents can hop on an NJ Transit bus that runs along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Some bus routes like the 603 and 613 can take locals all the way to Downtown Trenton. Drivers often use U.S. Route 1 to get downtown or cross into Pennsylvania. North Trenton's proximity to New York City, Philadelphia and the Jersey Shore "is prime for people who enjoy going to those specific areas but don't want to deal with the congestion of living there," Stokes says. Those who want to fly out for vacation can buy a ticket at Trenton-Mercer Airport just 6 miles north of the neighborhood.
Capital Health Regional Medical Center right nearby
Capital Health Regional Medical Center sits in the middle of the neighborhood. Industrial warehouses, towing lots and supply centers border the neighborhood, so traffic can pick up when employees are leaving for the day.
