And you’re not in Manhattan, which is great.” Locals have endless restaurant options to try with cuisines from a range of cultures. The largest mall in Queens sits on the eastern edge, and nearby trains and subway stations make it easy to commute into Manhattan.

Parades and Little Thailand
Being a melting pot for cultures means having plenty of holidays to celebrate. Northern Boulevard and 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights shut down multiple times throughout the year for parades. July has the Festival De Las Flores Parade, Colombian Day Parade and International Peruvian Parade. The Bolivian Day Parade and Halloween Parade happen in October. Areas like Little Thailand near Woodside Avenue, with locations like Thai Thai grocery store, Zaab Zaab restaurant and Wat Buddha Thai Thavorn Vanaram temple. More places of worship fill the area. There are Hindu and Buddhist temples, such as Vihara Parivara Dhamma Acala and the Geeta Temple Ashram. The Elmhurst Islamic Center and the Masjid Al Taufiq are additional options. Some churches sit nearby, including the Elmhurst Baptist Church with its Tudor-style structure built in the 1900s.
Shopping and dining in Elmhurst
Queens Place has big box stores like Target and Best Buy. Queens Center Mall is the largest shopping mall in Queens, with four stories filled with stores and kiosks. Residents don’t have to visit the busy mall to find popular eateries. Places like the Georgia Diner see crowds for classic American dishes to Greek specialties. Patacon Pisao, a Venezuelan sandwich shop, began as a food truck in Manhattan and now has a popular shop in Elmhurst. Spicy Shallot is just one of the many busy Thai restaurants in the Little Thailand area. SkyFoods offers traditionally Asian ingredients, while Bravo Supermarkets has everyday items.

“There’s really a mix of everything,” Tamboni says. “Lots of co-ops, lots of single-family houses. You have fully detached houses, semi-detached and row houses. The market for renters is really hot, and so are single-family houses. The market has been pretty lively for the past six or seven years.” A detached single-family home can cost anywhere from $1 million to almost $2 million. Row houses go for $950,000 to $1.5 million. Studio and one-bedroom co-ops and condos go for $200,000 to $400,000. Two-bedroom units can cost $400,000 to $750,000, depending on the building's amenities and location. A penthouse unit can sell for over $1 million. Roads near Queens Boulevard and 51st Avenue may flood during heavy rain.

Commuting from Elmhurst
Traversing around and out of Elmhurst is made possible by the nearby subway stations, MTA bus stops, highways and paved sidewalks. “Elmhurst is very close to highways and very close to the subway. And Queens Center Mall is literally steps away,” Tamboni says. The Grand Ave-Newtown and Woodhaven Boulevard subway stations connect to E, F, M and R trains, and they serve the southern half of the town. Four stations along Roosevelt Avenue connect to the 7 train line and serve the north half. MTA bus stops line major roadways, including Queens Boulevard, Grand Avenue and Broadway. Residents often hear planes overhead since LaGuardia airport is only 5 miles north of the neighborhood. NYC Health + Hospitals Elmhurst is also close by, making it easy to drive over for a doctor’s appointment.

Health sciences at the International High School
Elmhurst is served by the New York City Geographic District No. 24, giving parents and students multiple schools to choose from. The B-rated P.S. 7- Louis F. Simeone School is close by and offers pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade classes. P.S. 102 – Bayview, in the south half of town, has the same courses but receives a B-minus from Niche. Both schools feed into Newtown High School, which gets a B-minus. The International High School for Health Sciences teaches kids who have immigrated from all over the world. The school aims to help students learn English and introduce them to specialized study areas such as medicine, nursing and health care. Private schools also sit in the neighborhood, including St. Bartholomew School and Saint Adalbert Catholic Academy.

Elmhurst Park's playground and war memorial
The neighborhood has several parks and playgrounds, including Elmhurst Park, the former site of natural gas tanks. The park became a dedicated green space in 2011. The 6-acre space now has a playground and the Queens Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Frank D. O'Connor Playground and the Moore Homestead Playground have room to run around and jungle gym equipment. Queens Public Library at Elmhurst organizes events, including Tai Chi for seniors and adults conducted in Mandarin.

It is very diverse and everyone knows each other. (Or at least the people you neighbor. ) The schools are really good and offer the same education. No public school is "smarter" than the other. The 7 and M and R are all easily accessible for a fast commute.
