Queens community near the Long Island Expressway
Pomonok is named for the Algonquin Indian word used to describe the region. Today, this 2-square-mile neighborhood sits just south of the Long Island Expressway, sandwiched between two more affluent neighborhoods, Queensboro Hill and Kew Gardens Hills. But proximity means Pomonok residents may enjoy some of the amenities of these two neighborhoods while also enjoying the relatively lower prices of Pomonok. Chatter Singh, a local licensed real estate salesperson with Keller Williams Liberty says, “Each neighborhood in Queens impacts the next.”
Condos, townhomes and single-family homes with historic charm
“There are a lot of working families,” says Singh of this part of Queens. “There are owner-occupied residences and owners renting. It’s changed a lot in regards to development.” High-rise condominiums built within the last decade are offering two-bedroom, two-bath units for just over $600,000 with very low homeowners association fees. Plain postwar townhomes with four bedrooms can be found for under $1 million. There are also humble Cape Cods with cheerily painted siding on small lots. A two-bedroom was recently listed for $840,000. There is some lovely prewar architecture here. A historic three-bedroom colonial revival with an attractive façade of brick and stone is on the market for $1.1 million.
Well-rated magnet schools
Theoretically a child could grow up in this part of Queens and receive good quality schooling from kindergarten through college. PS 201 The Discovery School for Inquiry and Research is ranked in the top 5% of NYC schools by the local Department of Education. This STEAM magnet school is well-regarded for its blend of socio-emotional learning and rigorous academics. The Magnet School of Global Studies and Leadership is a similarly highly ranked school serving kindergarten through eighth grade students. Its small class sizes and innovative electives – American Sign Language is one option – make it a parental favorite.
Recreation and culture at Queens College and neighborhood parks
Queens College sits to the west of Pomonok and residents may enjoy a variety of recreational and cultural offerings at this impressive outpost of the City University of New York. The Kupferberg Center for the Arts is a short walk from any home in the community and produces a yearly slate of music offerings for the public, from symphonies to jazz duos. Jib Lanes is a bowling alley in the center of Pomonok. Residents have been bowling strikes and gutter balls at this family-friendly spot for over half a century. Kissena Park is two blocks north of the Long Island Expressway and offers cricket and soccer fields, basketball and bocce courts and a golf course, along with a variety of wooded paths and shaded benches.
Supermarkets and fast-casual eats
There are two Key Foods supermarkets in this small neighborhood. An Associated Fresh Marketplace is next to the headquarters of the New York Police Department’s 107th Precinct. The Pomonok Houses, a subsidized project of the New York City Housing Authority, are next door. A smattering of Afghani kabob eateries populates this southern part of Pomonok. There are a couple of popular pizzerias in the north. Filmore’s Tavern is housed on the site of a Prohibition-era speakeasy. A short walk north into Flushing will lead you to a Chinese food scene widely considered to be the most authentic and exciting in New York City.
Ten blocks from the subway
Bus is the most convenient form of public transportation here as the nearest subway lines are the 7 train in Flushing to the north or the E/F line in Jamaica to the south, both of which are at least a 10-block walk for Pomonok residents. Many people drive as street parking is easy and detached homes usually have driveways. The Long Island Expressway leads anywhere in the five boroughs or straight to the beaches of Long Island. Despite its lack of a subway, Pomonok is a hidden treasure in this fast-growing section of Queens.
