In northeast Fort Wayne, Blackhawk offers quiet suburban living on the edge of big things happening in the city. “We’re gaining national attention from all the progress we’re making revitalizing downtown and bringing in new developments,” says Broker Manager Ed Tobey, with The Tobey Group, P.C. “The latest new thing is that there’s going to be a multi-billion-dollar data center built real close to here,” he says, referring to a 12-building campus planned for 900 acres just 7 miles south. The realtor, a Fort Wayne local who’s been working with clients buying and selling homes since 1970, says that Blackhawk’s location close to, but not in the middle of, the action is its most appealing feature. “It’s a popular area near good schools and shopping, and close enough to downtown to enjoy all the new stuff without having to deal with living in a construction zone,” he says.
A good neighborhood to plant roots in
The split-level, ranch and Colonial Revival-style homes that line Blackhawk’s quiet residential streets were mostly built between the 1970s and 1980s. “There are some new construction homes here, but it’s predominantly all built up,” says Tobey. “It’s not usually where you’d look if you were searching for a brand-new house, but the houses here are all nice and well-maintained for their age. It’s a good neighborhood to plant roots in,” he says. Prices here are on par with the median for the city, ranging between $200,000 and $275,000. “It used to be that you could get a house here for $100,000, but now even small ranches are going for nearly $260,000,” says Tobey, adding that low inventory and rising prices in Fort Wayne as a whole are likely contributing factors. “There’s pent-up demand and the town has a real good future, so prices around here reflect that.”

Teaching the next generation of medical professionals
Students here are served by schools in the Fort Wayne Community Schools district. Many go to Glenwood Park Elementary, Blackhawk Middle and Snider High School between preschool and 12th grade. Both Glenwood Park and Blackhawk earned B-minus grades from Niche in 2023. That same year, Snider earned a B. Snider teens who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine after graduation can participate in the school’s Project Lead the Way Biomedical Sciences program. They’ll take a variety of health-related courses, all designed to give them hands-on, practical experience during their time in the program. Biomedical Sciences students can also participate in various internships, with positions available in everything from medical and therapeutic-style fields to diagnostic and research-based fields. For college-aged students, Purdue University’s Fort Wayne campus is just 3.5 miles northwest. “We have good schools here in Fort Wayne, it’s a big draw to the city in general, but especially to Blackhawk,” says Tobey, noting that the neighborhood is in close proximity to not just the university, but the grade schools, too. Glenwood Park Elementary, Blackhawk Middle and Snider High are all within 2 miles of most homes.

Neighborhood parks and bowling alleys
For a breath of fresh air, residents can head just a mile south to Jehl Park. The sunny neighborhood park has everything from basketball and tennis courts to a classic, colorful playground and a grassy, multiuse field. A little farther afield, there’s also Kreager Park, nearly 3 miles south. The more expansive park offers a sprawling playground, baseball diamonds, tennis courts and paved trails. On the park’s south end, its trail system connects to the River Greenway, another multiuse path that traces the Maumee River shoreline. Closer to home, Georgetown Entertainment’s arcade and bowling alley offer tons of opportunities for indoor recreation in the Georgetown Square shopping center less than a mile away.

Many Blackhawk residents visit Georgetown Square for their everyday essentials. The shopping center at the corner where East State Boulevard meets Maplecrest Road is home to a Kroger and a Dollar General, as well as an Anytime Fitness. The bustling corner has dining options ranging from fast-food classics like Wendy’s and Hardee’s to more local establishments like Cebolla’s Mexican Grill and Miyabi Sushi & Asian Cuisine. Dicky’s 21 Taps, a popular eatery with everything from barbecue and seafood to salads and pizza on its extensive menu, is less than a quarter mile north up Maplecrest Road from Georgetown Square.
