An active arts and event scene that buzzes year-round

Downtown Fort Wayne brings its vibrant energy to life through arts and events, which can be experienced throughout the year. “There are community events year-round, and every summer weekend you can find a downtown festival, like Greekfest and Taste of the Arts,” says Cory Allen, a local Fort Wayne Realtor with The Regan and Ferguson Group. He’s been assisting homebuyers in the area for over 15 years. “From May through October, the Fort Wayne Farmers Market takes place every Saturday, with hundreds of local vendors.” Downtown is home to Arts Campus Fort Wayne, with locals and visitors enjoying the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, as well as Fort Wayne Dance Collective and Artlink.

The city's riverside parks and miles of trails

Fort Wayne is home to three rivers: St. Mary’s, St. Joseph and the Maumee. “The city has intentionally embraced the three rivers that converge downtown,” Allen says. “Headwaters Park, Promenade Park and Swinney Park line the rivers and are connected by a trail system that runs over 100 miles.” Headwaters Park is a popular place for summer festivals or winter ice skating, while at Promenade Park, you can join a riverboat tour, go kayaking or just hang out by the riverside. Over at Swinney Park, kids tumble around the playground, friends shoot hoops on the basketball court and anglers cast a line at the riverbank or central lake.

Downtown Fort Wayne is a hot spot for some of the city’s best restaurants, trendy cafés and bars and locally owned shops. “The Landing, a pedestrian-only block, has a collection of awesome dining spots, boutique shopping and even residential spaces, so it’s a true hub of activity,” Allen says. “Coney Island has been an iconic local landmark since 1914. It’s a classic hot dog shop that’s really beloved.” Some other popular stops for food and drink include:

  • Copper Spoon, known for New American dishes and craft cocktails
  • Tolon’s chic vibes and rotating farm-to-table menu
  • Old Gas House Restaurant for high-quality seafood and steak
  • Conner's Rooftop, a bustling bar with live music and city views

Historic homes and condos within a wide price range

A walk through Downtown Fort Wayne will take you past both renovated historic buildings and new construction. “Downtown Fort Wayne offers a diverse housing stock, and pricing can vary widely depending on location, property type and condition,” Allen says. “Entry-level options are your smaller historic homes and condos, and sometimes you can still find opportunities under $200,000, if they’re up to renovating. More turnkey homes or newer condo developments tend to price higher.” High-rise tower units with about 1,000 square feet of space will usually price in the low $400,000s to mid-$500,000s. Meanwhile, sprawling 3,000-square-foot units can easily pass $900,000 and into the low $2 million range. The neighborhood is extremely renter-friendly.
