Unique Fremont neighborhood claims status as the first film hub
Before there was Hollywood, there was Niles. Once a dusty railroad town at the foot of the rolling hills that served as the setting of Charlie Chaplin’s silent movies, Niles is now a neighborhood in Fremont with a personality steeped in that history. Its name is embedded in the hills overlooking the palm tree-lined main strip, a subtler version of the iconic Hollywood sign. A mix of homes with eclectic styles surrounds Niles Boulevard—old refurbished cabins, unique stucco ramblers, pastel-tinted cottages—with newer developments giving a nod to the playful, historic vibe. “Niles is very charming,” says Priscilla Bravo, part owner of Skilletz cafe in the historic district. “It really was the first Hollywood. There are so many antique shops along here. Even some of the houses are antiques.”

Museums and events celebrate history and build community
The Niles Essanay Museum anchors the community in its film history, screening silent films regularly and celebrating the town’s glory days as the setting of iconoclastic films like Charlie Chaplin’s “The Tramp.” The esteemed filmmaker is captured in a mural on the side of an oldtown building, and the museum hosts a 3-day silent film festival every summer featuring live pianist accompaniment. Railway museums note another foundational element of the town—its location as a stop on the first transcontinental railroad line in 1870. “It really feels like you’re going back in time,” says Omar Murillo, Realtor with Everhome Real Estate and a top producer in the region. The Hot August Niles Car Show features classic cars, and antique fairs frequently draw visitors. But Niles is not buried in the past—every Earth Day, the community gets out to clean up the streets and paint fences, and free concerts are held in the town plaza every second Saturday during the summer.
