Less than a mile from the Galveston Seawall
Bayou Shore’s central location neighbors some of the island’s best attractions. To the west, Moody Gardens on Hope Boulevard is the ultimate entertainment destination with an aquarium, rainforest exhibit, golf course and water park. To the south, the Galveston Seawall stretches for 10 miles and is home to Galveston’s best beaches and waterfront restaurants.

Bayou Shores is the place to find colorful waterfront cottages
According to Susan Cahill, Agent with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, Bayou Shores is mainly occupied by full-time residents because of strict vacation home regulations in the area. Midcentury cottages and bungalows are the most popular choice and have exteriors ranging from brick and stone to bright paint in seafoam green or flamingo pink. These properties are typically under 2,000 feet, and homes under 1,000 square feet are common. Homes tend to be built close together, so large yards and corner lots are in demand for buyers looking for a bit more space. A Bayou Shores cottage might sell for between $100,000 to $500,000, depending on its size and age. Multi-story, elevated beach homes become more common close to the bay and sell for between $300,000 to $400,000. Hurricanes and storms are common during summer and fall, but Cahill says any properties built behind the Seawall are at less risk for flooding. Bayou Shores has a CAP Index Crime Score of 4, which matches the national average.

Close to the action of Mardi Gras and Galveston’s signature events
Galveston is known for its events, and living in a central neighborhood like Bayou Shores puts locals near all the action. Hundreds of visitors turn out each year for Mardi Gras in the spring, the Lone Star Motorcycle Rally in the fall and the Dickens in The Strands festivities in wintertime. Multiple food and wine festivals, art exhibits and history tours are held on the island throughout the rest of the year. “We have a lot of events, and a lot of people like to stay closer in town so that they don’t have to drive back out after they’ve spent the whole day having fun,” Cahill says.

Bayou Shores is close to many of the island's big-box stores, so locals have quick access to Kroger and Walmart on Seawall Boulevard or Target on Broadway Street.

Lessons in literature and science at Burnet Elementary
Families on the entire island are served by the Galveston Independent School District. Young students may attend Parker Elementary, which earns a B from Niche, or Burnet Elementary STREAM Magnet School.
