San Jacinto offers laid-back coastal living on Galveston Island
Texas is known for its plains and vast farmland, but in Galveston Island's San Jacinto neighborhood, coastal living is the big draw. Bordering the Gulf of Mexico, San Jacinto offers beachy vibes and a laid-back lifestyle less than an hour outside of downtown Houston. A vibrant neighborhood with excellent restaurants and a unique blend of history and culture, San Jacinto is a destination not only for homebuyers, but vacationers as well. "If you take Key West, New Orleans and Charleston and you put them in a blender and hit frappe, that's what you basically have here, but with a Texas kind of attitude," says local Realtor Suzanne Corbin of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, who has sold dozens of homes on Galveston Island.
San Jacinto is home to about 6800 full time residents.

The Galveston Seawall is the main stretch for joggers and cyclists
San Jacinto is a haven for outdoor recreation. The historic Galveston Seawall spans 10 miles along the coast and features the longest continuous sidewalk in the United States, serving as a top spot for jogging and cycling with picturesque beachside views. The family-owned Porretto Beach is San Jacinto's main attraction, enticing swimmers and sunbathers throughout the summer. "I think the water attracts a special breed of people, and we all have that love for the water in common," says local Realtor Sharron Hensley of HomeSmart, a native Houstonian who now lives in Galveston. "It really brings out the best in people when there's a shared love for the water and wildlife in the area, and being right by the Seawall provides a lot of opportunity for adventure on the bay." Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier is a hot spot for adrenaline junkies seeking high-speed roller-coaster thrills, but for something more laid-back, The Bryan Museum on 21st Street tells the tale of Texas' storied past.

San Jacinto features bungalows and Craftsmans and remodeled Victorians
Vibrant Craftsman-style homes add a splash of color to the neighborhood, while renovated Victorians bring out more of a historic feel alongside smaller coastal bungalows. Many homes price between $300,000 and $700,000, though some larger properties with ample square footage can sell for over $1 million. "Our price points on our properties are still very low by comparison to other places," Corbin says, adding that many residents move to the area from out of state after retiring.

Dickens on The Strand is one of Texas' most unique events
Galveston is home to various community events and festivals, but according to Corbin, Dickens on The Strand is perhaps the most unique. The annual event, which features a 19th-century Victorian London twist, is held on the first weekend in December. Guests flock to Historic Downtown Galveston for the parades and live entertainment, as well as the food from local vendors. The works of Charles Dickens inspired the yearly event despite the famed English novelist never having called Galveston Island home.
Locals celebrate Shykatz for its casual vibes and breakfast staples
In San Jacinto, there's no shortage of acclaimed restaurants to choose from. Saltgrass Steak House and Miller's Seawall Grill on Seawall Boulevard are favorites for visitors, but locals frequent smaller eateries farther inland. Shykatz is known for its all-day breakfast menu, and just north of San Jacinto, the upscale Rudy & Paco is acclaimed for its seafood and signature cocktails. Arlan's Market is the main spot for grocery runs, though D'Ambra Meat Market & Grocery is another neighborhood fixture. Additional restaurants and independent retail shops also sit along Postoffice Street in Historic Downtown Galveston less than a mile north.

Residents enjoy walkability and solid access to major roads
The neighborhood's sidewalk-lined streets and bike lanes encourage an active lifestyle, though locals will need vehicle access to reach destinations off of Galveston Island. Seawall Boulevard is the main thoroughfare along the coast, while Broadway Avenue merges with Interstate 45 and leads to the mainland. By hopping on I-45, locals are about a 50-mile drive from downtown Houston. San Jacinto also offers quick access to UTMB Health's Galveston campus, which sits off Harborside Drive, as well as the small Scholes International Airport.

San Jacinto has been impacted by hurricanes in the past
Hurricanes are a factor for San Jacinto and Galveston Island at large. Because of the Seawall, flooding isn't as common compared to other beachside communities, especially along the southside. The island's northside, which doesn't benefit from Seawall protection, is closer to sea level, making flood damage far more likely. According to Corbin, locals will stay home and throw "hurricane parties" for weaker hurricanes, though stronger storms can pose a much more serious threat. "If you're looking at a Category 3 or Category 4, your butt needs to be off the island," she says.
