Good living in the heart of the Mahoning Valley
Centered in the Mahoning Valley, Girard is one of Youngstown's many suburbs. According to the mayor, the city makes a concerted effort to provide meaningful amenities to its nearly 9,500 residents. "We have about a zillion entertainment opportunities and a team of firefighters that are also certified paramedics," says Mark Zuppo, mayor of Girard since 2024. "And if you live in Girard, it's all free." In addition to these services, Girard has a commuter-friendly location, B-graded schools, and below-average house prices.
Split-levels and ranch-style homes in Churchill
Girard's median home price is around $140,000, well below the national median price and slightly lower than Youngstown's. "You get your money's worth living here," says Zuppo. "A lot more bang for your buck." Midcentury homes are available in Churchill , while historic homes from the 19th century fill the town center. Some of the area's newest construction is north of Tod Park.
Though most locals commute to Youngstown or Warren for work, the area does have a handful of local industries, including healthcare and manufacturing. "I hesitate to use the term' bedroom community,'" says Mayor Zuppo. "But it's accurate for our current state."

Fireworks Italian culture at The Mount Carmel Festival and Past Times Arcade
According to Mayor Zuppo, Girard is expanding and working hard to provide its residents with activities, accessibility and celebrations, quadrupling its recreation budget in recent years. "We're looking at bids for an ice-skating rink and starting a farmers market," he says. "That's just a couple of plans."
The Mount Carmel Festival celebrates the city's Italian heritage with a weekend of food, live music and the biggest fireworks display in the Mahoning Valley. Other regular city-sponsored events include a summer concert series and a variety of holiday celebrations, all aimed at creating a strong sense of community pride. "My goal as mayor is to give kids a reason to return to Girard after college," says Zuppo.
Opened in 2023, Past Times Arcade is one of the Midwest's most popular locations for retro gaming. Owned and operated by the founder of the world's first pinball convention, the former grocery store has over 600 gaming cabinets and pinball tables. "Everyone in the pinball world knows about Past Times," says Mayor Zuppo. "It's a cultural destination."

Churchill is a quiet suburban neighborhood on the outskirts of Girard. The name of the wider city was taken from a French-American philanthropist who founded Girard College in Philadelphia. “There aren’t a whole lot of businesses, but Churchill is a pretty solid bedroom community for people who work in nearby cities,” says Century 21 Realtor William Broxson, who was born and raised in Trumbull County and has sold over six million dollars’ worth of real estate in the area. Homes are well-maintained and just a short drive from parks, schools and major roadways.
Traditional suburban tracts are peppered with large oak and pine trees. Sidewalks and low-traffic streets make it safe for children to play outdoors while providing a sense of quiet and privacy to the neighborhood. Homes feature spacious interiors, from the open floor plans of ranch-style homes to the segmented but just as spacious interiors of split-level homes. There is also a fair amount of contemporary home builds in the area. Overall, Churchill homes feature well-maintained and spacious yards and offer an affordable price range, from $45,000 for a modest bungalow up to $450,000 for a split-level home with a larger home lot.
Public school students are served by both the Youngstown City School District and the Liberty Local School District, beginning their academic careers at primary schools like Harding Elementary. This school has an overall C-minus rating on Niche and teaches from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Students move on to intermediate and secondary institutions such as William S. Guy Middle and Liberty High School. Both schools have at least an overall C-rating on Niche. Liberty High has excellent academic programs that have graduated Department of Health Directors and professional athletes for NFL teams like the Baltimore Ravens.
Locals can get out and get active at Churchill’s local green spaces and community buildings. Churchill Park sits along a dense patch of forest and offers playgrounds, walking trails, and basketball courts where locals can play pickup games. Golf enthusiasts practice their backswing at the Youngstown Country Club, featuring rolling fairways that provide a stimulating challenge for golfers of all experience levels. Hundreds of written and digital titles are available at the Liberty Library, which also provides a notary service and weekly events for all ages.
Local restaurants and franchise retailers are just a short drive down the road, “Churchill has a few businesses, a local restaurant here and there, but most people go elsewhere for big shopping,” says William Broxson from Century 21. Homestyle Italian flavors are served up at Nonni’s Ristorante, a favorite local restaurant with a warm and intimate dining room. Churchill is also home to many regional franchises, such as Coaches Burger Bar, which offers televised sporting events and savory American fare. El Tapatio is another franchise in northeastern Ohio, offering indoor and outdoor seating as well as a selection of cocktails and classic Mexican dishes. Locals can get discounted products and home goods at Five Below. Big box stores like Walmart offer fresh produce, pharmaceuticals and other household necessities.
Wide suburban streets allow cyclists to traverse the neighborhood, and a handful of public transit stops offer routes around the area. However, most residents depend on cars and trucks to get around Churchill. Thankfully, freeways like the I-80 and Ohio State Highway 11 interchange run through the neighborhood, providing locals with routes to Youngstown, five miles to the south, and to Warren, 12 miles to the northwest. The Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport is seven miles north along Ohio State Highway 193, and the St. Joseph Warren Hospital is 10 miles to the northwest just outside of Warren.
