Wyndham is a master-planned community in the northwesternmost suburb of Richmond. It earned the No. 1 spot in the “Best Suburbs to Buy a House in Virginia” category according to Niche, which also rates it A-plus. Today, Wyndham is home to over 10,000 residents in Henrico County. But before development began in 1992, Wyndham was farmland; rural pastures still surround it to the north. It is now almost entirely cul-de-sacs lined with trees and grassy lawns. Wyndham is the sort of place where a starter home can lead to a forever home as families grow. It’s close to top-rated schools, like Deep Run High, which boasts a 97% graduation rate, according to Niche. “One of the reasons we moved here is because of the excellent schools,” says Rachel Smith, longtime Wyndham resident. “It’s safely tucked away off Nuckols Road, but with proximity to the interstates. We don’t have the traffic that you’d get off the main streets, but it’s still close to the malls and all the restaurants you’d need.” Wyndham is within Richmond’s West End, minutes from retail therapy at Short Pump Town Center. The commute to downtown Richmond is 20 miles, where major employers like Dominion Energy and CoStar Group are clustered; both Capital One’s Westcreek Campus and Carmax’s Home Office are 10 miles away. Residents may also work at Innsbrook Center, an office park about 3 miles away, which is home to 500 companies. Wyndham’s overall CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10, much lower than the national figure of 4.

Competitive housing market in Henrico County
New Traditional and Colonial Revival homes sit back on leafy, well-tended lots that range between a quarter- and half-acre. Cul-de-sacs contain primarily single-family homes with three to six bedrooms, though subdivisions may include townhouses, condos and apartments. The Wyndham Foundation, the neighborhood’s professionally managed HOA, takes care of all the yardwork and landscaping for maintenance-free residences, making them a popular choice for older residents. All homeowners are part of the homeowner’s association, and fees are $174 per quarter, which covers trash pickup, community landscaping and membership to the Wyndham Swim and Racquet Club. The median home price is about $760,000, significantly above the national median, and home values are steadily rising. “Homes sell quickly — usually with multiple offers,” says Tom Stanley, a Realtor with Joyner Fine Properties who specializes in Henrico and Hanover counties. “That’s across the board in the Richmond area, though. Especially if you go anywhere from Church Hill to Goochland and run close to the river. The closer you stay to that corridor, north of the river, the stronger the market.”

Highly-rated Henrico County Public Schools within biking distance
The Henrico County Public Schools district is rated B-plus by Niche. Thanks to the network of paved paths and sidewalks, older elementary students can bike to Shady Grove Elementary School, which earns an A-minus. “Biking to school is kind of a big deal for fourth and fifth graders,” says Tim Smith, Wyndham resident since 1995. “They can’t do it until fourth grade; it’s a rite of passage.” Wyndham also includes after-school and daycare businesses. Short Pump Middle School and Holman Middle School both earn a B-plus and serve grades 6—8. According to Niche, Deep Run High School is the No. 1 Best Public High School in Henrico County. Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia are popular college choices for Deep Run graduates.

Wyndham’s members-only recreation clubs
Residents experience all four seasons, including a hot, humid summer. “We’ll get ice cream trucks coming through on hot summer days,” Smith says. The community’s outdoor pool buzzes with activity between swim team practices, children cannonballing off the low dive and older kids braving the high dive. Local teen lifeguards oversee the alternating adult swim and open swim. Wyndham Swim and Racquet Club also has a fitness center and courts for tennis and pickleball. Residents may also pay for membership at The Dominion Club, a private country club with an 18-hole golf course, five-acre lake, tennis courts and clubhouse. Basketball is popular at Otter Pond Park. Pouncey Tract Park’s new championship pickleball complex includes covered courts. Shady Grove Family YMCA and the ice rink at SkateNation are nearby indoor exercise facilities.

Shopping at Short Pump
Wyndham borders Short Pump, a suburb known for its abundance of shopping centers and retailers, including Wegman’s, an upscale supermarket chain. Town Center at Twin Hickory offers sit-down and to-go dining options. Short Pump Town Center, a thriving open-air mall, has a host of nationally and internationally recognized retailers, including central Virginia’s only Apple electronics store and a slate of restaurants that includes Indian cuisine at Lehja, managed by James Beard Award Semifinalist Sunny Baweja.

Driving around the Richmond metro area
Wyndham is near the interchange of Interstate 64, which extends across Virginia, and Interstate 295, which encircles the eastern half of Richmond.
