AboutGray is growing town outside of Portland

About 17 miles from Portland, Gray is a growing town with easy access to the interstate. “Gray is really the crossroads of Maine in that we are conveniently located near Lewiston, Yarmouth, Wyndham and Portland,” Hadyniak says. “Besides the convenience of living here, Gray has a pretty neat and humble small-town characteristic, but with an increasingly modern feel.” While Interstate 95 lets locals explore the amenities of the surrounding areas, there is still plenty to do in town. Residents can get dinner from Two Mums, eat at Henry Pennell Municipal Park, or spend their afternoon at the Gray Public Library. Students attend Maine School Administrative District 15, which receives a B-minus from Niche.

Homes sit nestled among trees

Grassy lawns stretch to the paved roads, decorated with manicured bushes and gardens. Homes toward the village area sit closer together, offering views of their neighbors. As people move closer to the edge of town, they live on larger, secluded lots surrounded by dense tree lines. Cape Cods and farmhouses from the early and mid-20th century sit alongside ranch styles and bilevels from the 1970s and 1980s, and some newer construction is scattered throughout. Prices typically range from $350,000 to $625,000, although some properties can cost more than $700,000.

Award winning sports at Gray-New Gloucester High

Gray is part of the Maine School Administrative District 15 (MSAD 15). “I have two kids, and I’m looking forward to them attending one of the schools in MSAD 15,” Hadyniak says. Students can start at Russell School, which receives a C-plus from Niche and boasts a student-teacher ratio of 11 to one. Next, they can attend the B-rated Gray-New Gloucester Middle School before Gray-New Gloucester High School, which earns a B-minus. Students can try out for one of the high school’s sports teams, including the boys’ basketball team, which won its first state title since 1975 in 2024 at the Class A Championship.

Locals make their way through Gray

The heart of Gray, where the town hall and Henry Pennell Municipal Park are located, is walkable. “I walk to work every day, and then I walk around town to get my coffee in the morning or grab something for lunch,” Hadyniak says. The rest of the town is car-dependent, and Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 202 run through the area, making it easy for residents to travel to Portland but also resulting in increased traffic. Portland International Jetport is about 18 miles away, and the closest emergency room is at Maine Medical Center, about a 17-mile drive. Gray receives a Crime Score of one out of 10 from the CAP Index, compared to the national average of four out of 10.

Residents can enjoy restaurants in and around Gray

While many of the dining options in Gray are popular chains, such as Subway, there are a handful of locally owned restaurants in town. Hadyniak frequents Two Mums Kitchen, owned by a mother-daughter duo and boasts a seasonal menu. “The owners are really nice, and the food is great.” Another option is Fishermen’s Net, a seafood restaurant with freshly caught lobsters, clams, and mussels. People can also travel to restaurants in the surrounding towns. “There is a great craft pizza place called Brickyard Hollow that’s in the town adjacent to us, New Gloucester,” Hadyniak says. Residents can get groceries from Hannaford. Home Depot and Walmart are about 10 miles away, while Target is about a 20-mile drive.

Locals can explore Gray trails, parks and libraries

Like much of Maine, Gray is surrounded by nature. Locals can head to the Libby Hill Trails, which feature wide and narrow trails ideal for hiking, cross-country running and snowmobiles. The town is also home to the Maine Wildlife Park, which has over 30 wildlife species. Henry Pennell Municipal Park has a soccer and Little League field, a playground, and a walking path. In the winter, people can visit the ice rink, open for public skating from dawn to dusk. Wilkies Beach sits on the shore of Crystal Lake and is open exclusively to Gray residents. “It’s just a nice place to enjoy some time by the water,” Hadyniak says. “It’s not a huge beach, but it’s enough to comfortably fit whoever wants to go there.” Golfers can schedule a tee time at the 18-hole course at Spring Meadows Golf Course. Residents can also spend time at the Gray Public Library, which hosts a full calendar of activities, such as movie nights and book clubs.

Thousands attend Wild Blueberry Festival in Gray

Gray hosts the annual Wild Blueberry Festival on the second Saturday of every August. “We get thousands of people coming to celebrate,” Hadyniak says. Attendees can enjoy lawn games and an arts and crafts market while listening to live music, or they can compete in the main events: the Wild Blueberry Bake-off, a pie-eating contest and a spelling bee, which celebrates the importance of pollinators in the growing process. The next day, people can visit the Gray Village Farmers’ Market on Sundays from July to October to find fresh produce.

Gray Village Transformation Project

The town introduced the Gray Village Transformation Project to improve the village area by increasing walkability and accessibility. While still in its early stages, current recommendations include introducing more greenery and sidewalks to town. “We’re trying to make the village less of a place you drive through and more of a place you stop and shop and eat and play,” Hadyniak says.
