A little less than an hour from the big city
The commuter rail train still reaches Grayslake, about 50 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. While still considered a Chicago suburb, Grayslake has a special, unique vibe about it. “It’s got a small downtown area with local businesses and historic homes. It’s a great small-town feel,” says Dick Barr, broker/owner with Dick Barr Group with almost 25 years of real estate experience. “Transportation options are convenient, which means you’re still not far from Chicago.”
The Grayslake Village has a rich history dating back to 1895.

Historic downtown
The downtown area of Grayslake, known as the village center, is full of local businesses and dining options. Find out about the village's history by visiting the Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum. Various exhibits chronicle the area's growth since it was founded in the late 1800s and a history of interesting correspondence the village has gotten through the years at the post office. 129 Center Cut refers to the address on Center Street where it’s located. Inside, the décor is a mix of rustic and modern, and the menu has steaks, burgers, pizza and pasta. It’s also a popular place for drinks after work. For casual comfort food with a little attitude, try Fred’s Diner. “It’s a shotgun-style retro restaurant where the wait staff is a bit snarky,” Barr says. “It’s nothing rude—it’s all done charmingly, and it’s a tradition in some Chicago-style diners.”
