A college community close to downtown
Sitting a mile east of the heart of Greensboro, the lively college community of Cumberland is taking center stage. The excitement of a fast-paced city center merges with the established century-old North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCA&T), making for an upbeat, youthful neighborhood. Despite the presence of the college campus, Cumberland maintains an even blend of students, working professionals and families. "Cumberland is a very congenial neighborhood," says John Newman, a Realtor with Allen Tate Realtors. "It's perfect for people that want to live downtown. You can walk to local shops, restaurants and nightlife without driving very long."
Downtown is just a five-minute drive away
The Cumberland neighborhood is well-connected, with North O. Henry Boulevard, also known as U.S. Route 29, running through it. This major road, along with East Market Street, provides quick access to central downtown Greensboro in just five minutes. For those who require public transportation, bus stops are conveniently scattered along East Market Street.

A couple of multi-level Colonial-revival homes also dot the lightly forested residential streets. Scenic city parks with sports courts and art installations
Parks close to Cumberland offer more than just the traditional basketball courts and playgrounds. Elaborate fountain centerpieces, interactive play elements and eye-catching art pieces all add to the appeal of these city parks. The hanging art installation at LeBauer Park is hard to miss, and the expansive play area includes a splash pad. Visitors can watch a show at the Price/Bryan Performance Pavilion or relax on the lawn with a good book. A few steps from LaBauer Park is Center City Park, which features large fountains and ample green recreational space.
Locals can access the Downtown Greenway, a scenic path connecting residents to the nearby downtown. "The Greenway is within walking distance of most homes, so it's really easy for people to hop right on," says Chelsea Phipps, Program Coordinator for the Downtown Greenway. Most of the planned 4 miles of the Greenway have been completed. "It makes it easy to commute without depending on cars, plus it's great exercise," says Phipps. Pocket parks and pollinator gardens dot the scenic path, along with artwork depicting stories of the community. "We have all sorts of programming on the Greenway," says Phipps. "There are free fitness classes every Tuesday night, a children's story time, environmental education workshops, goat yoga, canvas painting — the list goes on."
A farmers market that's been open for 150 years
Being a college community just a heartbeat from downtown, Cumberland is alive with hip bars and buzzing restaurants. The Abbey Taphouse is one example, serving craft beers amid a sleek environment. The taphouse features pours from across the region, wine, cider and kombucha. Locals can listen to live music while nursing a handcrafted cocktail at Flat Iron, open until 2 a.m. Heaping plates of warm comfort food are on the menu at Luxe Soulfood, like the fried chicken platter. Locals can stock up on produce at the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market, open since 1874. "The farmers market has been here for a really, really long time," says Meredith Parsons, a Realtor with TR&M Realty. "It's the first market we've had in Greensboro, and it's open year-round."
Broadway hits take center stage at the Steven Tanger Center
Just a mile west of Cumberland is the Miriam P. Brenner Children's Museum, which features hands-on exhibits for the entire family. Adjacent to the museum is the Steven Tanger Center, which brings Broadway hits, comedy shows and live music to town.
