Southmont is an established sector of southern Greensboro, close to several schools, parks and shopping spots. “Many that live in Southmont enjoy how close it is to downtown,” says Earl Smith, a Realtor with Solid Rock Realty and Associates. And when residents want to stay close to home, they can still enjoy the neighborhood’s small park and nearby shopping and dining. “You’re close to the city, but still very much in the countryside,” says Claudia Valencia of the area. Valencia is a Realtor with eXp Realty and has years of experience selling in the Greensboro area. “Nowadays in Greensboro, there’s a lot of development,” says Valencia. “But you’ll still find plenty of quiet, wooded areas.”

Highways 85 and 40 make commutes simple
It’s easy to hop on the road for out-of-city travel, with highways 85 and 40 just south of the neighborhood. Access to a vehicle is necessary to get around, as there aren’t any bus or train stops in or close to Southmont.

Southmont housing is made up primarily of ranch-style homes dating back to the late 1950s and early 1960s. Along Atlanta Street sit red-brick, 1,200-square-foot homes with well-manicured lawns and quaint front porches. A few split-level homes can also be found in the area, with four bedrooms and slightly more square footage. Most homes in Southmont are priced between $166,000 and $285,000, with properties, on average, sitting at around a quarter acre. The area is lightly wooded, with trees decorating residential streets and yards.

Area schools gear students up for college
Julius I. Foust Elementary School is home to just over 300 students and has a student-to-teacher ratio of 13-to-1. The school has an overall Niche grade of C-plus. Next, kids attend Jackson Middle School, which has an overall Niche grade of C. The school utilizes the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), which helps students prepare for post-secondary education. Students receive academic tutoring, financial aid planning and college campus visits. Meanwhile, Ben L. Smith High School offers everything from Olympic Weightlifting and Drama Club to Debate Club and Student Government as extracurricular activities. The school has an overall Niche grade of C-plus.

Neighborhood baseball games at Old Peck Park
There are several parks and open green spaces close to the neighborhood. The 3-acre Old Peck Park is just north of the community, off Freeman Mill Road. The park features a baseball diamond for fun neighborhood games. Less than a mile south is Spring Valley Park. Sitting off Meadowview Road, the park is a woodsy green space with the South Buffalo Creek running down the center. At the heart of the park is a small playground and a multi-purpose court.

Downtown dining and shopping are close at hand
Being close to downtown Greensboro means access to plenty of popular restaurants. About 2 miles north of Southmont is 33 & Elm Coffee House. The coffee shop is a nonprofit that gives all its revenue to the Industries of the Blind organization, meaning each cup of coffee bought is simultaneously a donation. Down the street from the cafe is Oden Brewing, a local spot offering a diverse list of specialty brews like the Prancing Moose Nordic Ale and the Smashing I Say! American IPA. The brewery is the spot for many fun community events and often has a food truck parked outside. Live music, stand-up comedy and trivia nights all happen at this local brewery. “Locals enjoy the various entertainment and nightlife options,” says Smith. "Cocktail Cove and Elm Street Lounge are great spots for grabbing drinks." Shopping gets done at the Four Seasons Town Centre, just a short drive west of Southmont. The mall features an array of recognizable brands like Dillard’s, American Eagle and JCPenney. Food Lion is a mere mile east of the neighborhood when residents need to grab their weekly groceries.
