Waterfront town offers many ways to connect
Stretching from the Hudson River up to John F. Kennedy Boulevard, and only four blocks wide, the town of Guttenberg nevertheless packs in plenty of homes, retail options and places for athletic recreation. “Despite it being very small, just a few blocks basically, it is a very well-known area in Hudson County, and it has all types of shops and restaurants,” says Jennifer Romero, a local Realtor and broker at RE/MAX. “So even though it’s small, it’s pretty big in a lot of ways.” And since the community is so walkable, it’s easy for residents to connect with each other, like at the various houses of worship that dot the landscape. The Hudson Church offers a modern non-denominational experience, while the Guttenberg Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Church presents more traditional programming. “People are drawn to Guttenberg because it’s a tightknit community,” Romero says. “Families have been living here for generations.”

Condos, multi-family homes and some classic styles like colonial
“Guttenberg is where you can go to find a variety of housing options,” says Tamayo Oppenheimer, a realtor with Silver and Oak Realty. She points out that Guttenberg’s housing is represented by a diverse portfolio of condominiums, but there are some single-family homes and two-family homes mixed in. One of the area's most prominent condominium complexes is The Galaxy Towers – luxury high rises with views of the Hudson River and New York City. “There are $1 million homes if you’re in front of the New York City skyline and then there are of course more affordable options as well, so there really is a different option for everybody depending on what their budget is and what they’re looking for,” Romero says. Prices for condominiums can drop as low as about $300,000, while a contemporary brick two-family house with 6 or 7 bedrooms can easily reach the $1 million price point. However, digging deeper it’s possible to find single-owner homes in the upper $500,000s and with more classic stylings, such as a colonial look. The community scores a 4 out of 10 on the CAP crime index.

Guttenberg’s most prominent event of the year is the weekly Summer Music Series. Certain genres are spotlighted: for example, on Thursday nights throughout the summer in Monument Park, residents can expect to dance to DJ sets. Other venues allow musicians to take the stage, too, like Waterfront Park. Smaller group events exist, too, like the Senior Monthly Movie at Kerasotes Theater. Transportation is included with the cost of the movie ticket. On Tuesdays at Town Hall, the mayor hosts a free farmers market, where produce is available on a first come, first served basis.
