An active community and outdoor recreation

Hamden is a New Haven County town that bears the nickname “The Land of Sleeping Giants,” for its famous, anthropomorphically shaped mountain. However, Hamden is also home to an active community of people who get to take advantage of the area’s outdoor recreation opportunities, diverse selection of homes and convenient location. "I think everyone's friendly," says local Realtor Marc Seigel of RE/MAX Rise. "People are neighborly, and it's a solid community."

Seamless transition from rural to suburban

Certain sections of Hamden have an urban-suburban feel, with homes organized neatly along sidewalk-lined streets. Other parts of Hamden have a more rural character, with homes dotting winding roads bordered by forestry. Most of the houses around town were built over the course of the 20th century, though some homes date back to the 18th century and others were built in recent years. Styles range from Cape Cods and ramblers of around 1,000 square feet to new traditional homes that are more than 6,000 square feet. "We run the gamut on houses," says Siegel, a fourth-generation Connecticut resident. "We have more in-town urban kind of locations, and we have some rural lots that are from one-tenth of an acre to 2 acres or more." Price tags in Hamden start at around $200,000 for a smaller single-family home or a townhouse and can reach more than $1 million in some cases.

32 miles of trails to explore

Hamden gets its name from the Sleeping Giant mountain which, from a distance, looks like an actual giant lying on its back and sleeping. Locals here can go to Sleeping Giant State Park to hike — there are 32 miles of trails here. The Tower Trail traces to the mountain’s 739-foot summit. The 1,700-acre West Rock Ridge State Park stretches into Hamden as well, and includes another 23 miles of trails. There’s also a lake here, Lake Wintergreen, that’s open to canoeing and fishing. One of Hamden’s prominent sports parks is Bassett Park, where there are five Little League fields, a playground, a basketball court and a tennis court. Siegel notes the youth sports scene in town, including the Hamden Fathers Baseball/Softball Association, which plays games at Bassett.
