Harmony, a quaint rural community
Most folks who live in Harmony either grew up in the area or moved in for quiet country living. “A lot of people realized during the pandemic that they didn’t want to be couped up in cities like Charlotte anymore,” says Ted Benbow, a real estate agent who lists land in the area for Mossy Oak Properties Land and Luxury. “In Harmony, people can work remotely and have a tractor and piece of land.” Although Harmony was not incorporated until 1927, people began congregating in the area in 1846 for the annual Harmony Hill Camp Meeting, a two-week religious revival. Worshippers would roll in on covered wagons, pitch their tents and join together in prayer and song. Like they always have, many of Harmony’s residents make their livings farming livestock and crops. The area is also home to a Lowe's regional warehouse and Southern Distilling Company, which produced 20,000 barrels of liquor in 2022.
Affordably priced homes
Home prices in Harmony are cheaper than in the nearest cities like Charlotte and Greensboro. A 1950s two-bedroom, one-bathroom home is valued at $55,000. A three-bedroom, one-bathroom 1960s ranch-style is valued at $200,000. A three-bedroom, two-bathroom 1870 farmhouse with two gas fireplaces and enough yard space for chickens and gardening has a $250,000 sales price. A three-bedroom, three-bathroom 1980s single-family home with a large enough porch for relaxing with several friends is valued at $400,000.

A family park and a hunting preserve
Homebuyers are drawn to Harmony’s pastoral landscape, and all homeowners have immediate access to rich natural scenery just by looking out their windows. At Tomlinson-Moore Family Park, people enjoy the paved walking trails, the playground, the horseshoe pits, the picnic shelter and the volleyball net. Some of Harmony’s residents spend weekends at Quail Haven Hunting Preserve. The preserve offers both guided and non-guided hunts.
Local businesses and big-box retail
Gunter’s Wing Shack is a popular local haunt among residents of Harmony. People come there to enjoy bar fare and beer. Gunter’s Country Store serves burgers, barbecue sandwiches and bacon and eggs. Residents buy plants to fill their yards at Harmony Gardens Nursery. Locals buy animal feed, seeds and landscaping tools at Lowry’s. Harmony residents stop by Dollar General for everyday necessities such as breakfast cereal, over-the-counter medication, soda and batteries. Many local farmers buy and sell cattle, goats and sheep at Harward Brothers Livestock Market. “There aren't as many shopping options in Harmony as some people might like," says Deanna Williams, a broker associate for Tarheel Realty II who lives and works in the area. "If someone wants to get in a car and drive 20 minutes, they can get to those things.” Food Lion and Walmart are in Statesville about 14 miles from the center of Harmony. People also travel to Statesville to purchase gifts and rustic furnishings at Resettlers Antique Mall.
Community breakfasts and holiday celebrations
Harmony holds a 4th of July Community Breakfast where residents gather to dine on country classics like sausage gravy, grits, biscuits and ham. The community also holds a Christmas parade that first responders, the high school marching band, local political candidates and even Santa Claus have been known to participate in. Many of Harmony's residents also join together for the 3 Day Road Market, where locals have yard sales along US Highway 21.
