Maintaining close-knit community amid rapid growth

Beginning as a 19th-century agricultural settlement in the foothills of the Traverse and Oquirrh Mountains, Herriman exploded with planned developments and population growth in the 1990s and 2000s, eventually incorporating with Salt Lake City as residents tried to manage their rapidly expanding community. “A lot of new development is happening in the southwest part of Salt Lake,” says Jonathan LaFollette, Communications Manager for Herriman. “Even as it grows, Herriman is a friendly, tight-knit environment. People like to do things together and help each other out.” Gatherings throughout the year, including summer rodeos, winter holiday events and the annual Fort Herriman Towne Days celebration, are incredibly well attended by locals, making it easy to get involved and meet neighbors.

Mountainous hiking trails through the Rose and Yellow Canyon

Pocket parks and playgrounds are sprinkled throughout the housing developments of Herriman, although W&M Butterfield Park is the most popular, with 60 acres of fields, playgrounds and volleyball courts. The park’s rodeo arenas host three days of roping, riding and racing events in the summer with packed stands. “Herriman has a big emphasis on parks and trails,” La Follette says. “We’re on the hillside overlooking the valley; it’s very scenic.” Set amongst the mountains to the west, Rose and Yellow Fork Canyon is a popular destination for hikers, bikers and bird watchers. Dirt trails wind through dry brush with stunning mountain views and are teaming with butterflies in the spring.
