“Woodsy is the first word that comes to mind,” says long-time High Point resident Maggie Neah when describing the Greater High Point community. “When you live in the area, you’re not always right next to an urban part. You have trees and nature all around you.” Stretching up to High Point University’s stunning campus, homes in this area tend to be older and more affordable than other areas of Guilford County, especially for young professionals who commute to Greensboro, according to Neah. She says the area has expanded since she was a kid, and new businesses have felt the positive impact of that growth over the years, making this an even more desirable area to live in.

Mixture of home styles near Emrywood
Craftsman-style homes dating to the 1920s typically average around $135,000, while mid-century ranch-style homes are priced around $200,000 on average; these homes’ front yards feature white-flowered magnolias next to towering red maple trees and short paths leading out to the steep residential streets, Early 20th-century Colonial-inspired homes sit on oak-tree-shaded lots near wide, paved streets in the well-known Emrywood suburb; these homes range between $350,000 and $500,000 and can include up to four bedrooms and fenced-in backyards with green ivy sprawling along wooden fences. One to two-story New Traditional homes built in the 2020s range between $170,000 and $280,000 and sit side-by-side in cul-de-sacs with no sidewalks.
HPU connecting with schools in area
The neighborhood is home to several Guilford County schools. Allen Jay Elementary is given an overall B grade on Niche, and Ferndale Middle receives a C-plus. Neah says most kids probably attend the B-minus rated Hight Point Central High, which often partners with High Point University’s Youth Leadership Academy, where students do volunteer work around the community.
High Point Greenway offers an escape into nature
Residents can walk, run or bike along the nearly 5-mile-long High Point Greenway trail that begins in Armstrong Park and ends at Piedmont Environmental Center; the trail is made up of a paved road that zig-zags through several acres of wilderness. Armstrong Park also includes pickleball courts and a youth baseball field. The 1500-acre Oak Hollow Park features a lake fit for skiing, fishing and boating, and a playground with slides. Locals can also hit a few balls at Oak Hollow Golf Course nearby. Neah says people also love hanging out at the new Truist Point stadium where the local High Point Rockers baseball competes.
Big-box stores at Oak Hollow
The NC grocery chain, Harris Teeter, is about a 3-mile drive, and Walmart Supercenter is roughly 5 miles away. High Point is known as the “Furniture Capital of the World” because of the many U.S. and international manufacturers here, and residents can find deals on leather sofas and dining room sets at High Point-Discount Furniture. Small strip malls like Westchester Commons and Oak Hollow Square house big-box retailers like Big Lots! and Dillard’s. Fast food chains can be found throughout the area, and local spots include Alex’s House which serves cubed hashbrowns and waffles, and Kepley’s BBQ, offering vinegar-based pulled pork sandwiches.
Celebrating jazz history at Coltrane festival
Neah says many people in the Greater High Point area will travel to Greensboro for most events, but the neighborhood offers a few each year. The John Coltrane International Jazz and Blue Festival takes place in Oak Hollow Park every year around Labor Day; Music fans can sway to the rhythm and celebrate jazz history as nationally recognized musicians perform their best hits. The city also puts on a free firework display for Independence Day at Oak Hollow. During Christmas, High Point University creates light displays and opens its private gates for cars to drive through the decorated campus.
Transit buses for getting around High Point
Neah says the walkability within this High Point neighborhood is not ideal, but High Point Transit buses frequently stop around the area. Interstates 74 and 85 cut through the neighborhood giving access to Greensboro about 18 miles northeast. Piedmont Triad International Airport is roughly 15 miles away, and the closest hospital is Wake Forest Baptist Health, about a 4-mile drive away in the eastern part of town.
