Steady growth from former farmlands
Founded in the 1850s as a railroad waystation, Hilliard is a suburb of Columbus located 13 miles northwest of the state capital. Though originally rural, its population exploded in the 1960s—the result of overflow from the surrounding communities of Dublin, Upper Arlington and Clintonville. Since then, job opportunities and a highly ranked school system have given Hilliard the same steady growth as its neighbors.

Historic homes and brand-new estates
The median price for homes is in the low $400,000s, higher than the Columbus median in the high $200,000s and comparable to the national median price in the low $400,000s. "We're seeing a really strong demand for single-family housing and a market that is only constrained by supply," says Dan Ralley, Hilliard's assistant city manager.
Old Hilliard has most of the area's historic homes, some dating back to the 1800s. Midcentury-era houses are more prominent in southern neighborhoods like Luxair or Roman Hill Estates. As the city expands, the newest homes are on the western side of Hilliard.
Hilliard has several business headquarters, including The Baesman Group and Eco Plumbers. Sutphen Corporation—the oldest fire truck manufacturer in the country—also has a major production center in the city. According to Ralley, the city is seeing substantial growth in the research and development sector, including a partnership with a series of startup engineering companies.

Live events at Hilliard's Station Park
Hilliard's Recreation and Parks Department has hundreds of acres of public land across 25 parks. One of the city's most beloved public parks is Hilliard's Station Park, built at the site of the original town square. "It's the center of the community in the summer months with splash fountains, outdoor seating and an amphitheater," Ralley says.

City focus on the arts
Hilliard's Public Arts Commission is a collection of local artists and educators who help the City Council find and fund appropriate art for the city. "They've already set aside a budget for more public art installations," Ralley says. Festivals and occasions are also very popular in the area. "We have over 20 annual events," says David Ball, the community relations manager of Hilliard. "Our summer concert series and a winter tree lighting, just to name a couple."
"We have major shopping centers anchored by full-service grocery stores," says Ralley. "We also have quite a few Middle Eastern and Mediterranean restaurants that are quietly fantastic." The area's downtown has also transformed in recent years, bringing new businesses and restaurants. "It's becoming a destination for people in and out of the community," says Ball.

Easy access to John Glenn Airport
Interstates 70 and 270 are major thoroughfares in the area. "Traffic is pretty reasonable here," Ralley says. "Primary access to I-270 is at Cemetery Road, so that area can get pretty congested, but it looks very good compared to bigger cities." The John Glenn Columbus International Airport is 20 miles east and has nearly 150 non-stop flights daily. Hilliard has public transportation provided by the Central Ohio Transit Authority. Hilliard's closest hospital is OhioHealth Dublin Methodist Hospital, 5 miles north.
One of the best school districts in the Columbus area
Niche gives Hilliard City School District an A-minus, naming it one of the best school districts in the Columbus area and one of the ten best school districts for athletes in the state. "The top reason people move here is for the school district," Ralley says.

Low crime, moderate environmental risk
According to FBI data, Hilliard sees less violent and property crime than both Ohio and the United States. "It's a very safe community," Ball says. "Any time we do surveys, people tell us how happy they are with the police and fire department."
Hilliard has warm, muggy summers and cold, wet winters with little risk from environmental factors like flooding.
An OSU-backed health and wellness facility
The Well, a health facility, is anticipated to open in mid-2025. It will have fitness rooms, a gymnasium and an extensive aquatic space. Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center will run a health and wellness center in the facility that offers physical therapy and other treatment options. "Our first, second and third priority right now is getting The Well built," Ralley says.

Brown Township is the crossing between Ohio’s natural wildlife and suburban living. With the Big Darby Creek on its western border, the neighborhood is about preserving and protecting the land and ecosystems. “To protect the wildlife, we need to protect the land that’s near it,” says Brown Township Board of Trustees member Pam Sayre. “Brown works as a buffer between the land and the rest of Columbus.”
Homes in Brown often have three to four bedrooms, giving residents plenty of space to relax at home. Craftsman models are common, usually offering around 3,000 square feet, and some homes in the farming community have five-acre lots. Many homes have two-car garages and wide driveways that can comfortably fit two SUVs, so street parking isn’t necessary. Streets may have some younger trees but are often more open for a more intimate community experience. Homebuyers can find some older ranch-style homes scattered throughout the township, offering the same number of bedrooms as the Craftsman. “It’s for people who want to go out into a piece of the country and aren’t really interested in living in denser quarters,” says Sayre.
Most homes range from $450,000 to $650,000. Homes closer to Hilliard with more bedrooms may cost closer to $850,000.
Prairie Oaks Metro Park is a 2291-acre park with multiple lakes, grasslands and prairies. People can canoe and kayak on Beaver Lake, the Darby Bend Lakes and Big Darby Creek. In the winter, the Coneflower and Bridle trails are open for cross-country skiing. Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park is 7,000 acres. In addition to canoeing and kayaking on the Big and Little Darby Creeks, locals can also fish. The Nature Center has a living stream flowing through it and is stocked with native creatures from the creeks. The park has also worked to restore the natural Ohio wildlife, including reintroducing bison to two enclosed pastures on the property. Roger A. Reynolds Municipal Park is 130 acres with an 18-hole disc golf course and an amphitheater on the grounds. It also has an aquatic center with water slides and outdoor pools.
Brown Elementary School serves kindergarten through fifth grade. Hilliard Station Sixth Grade Elementary School is a separate school for sixth graders. Niche gives both schools a B. Students graduate to Hilliard Memorial Middle School, often just called Memorial. Hilliard Bradley High School offers AP classes and the College Credit Plus (CCP) program, where students can dual enroll at local colleges and universities. In the winter, they also have a ski club for students. Both schools receive a B-plus from Niche.
Otie’s Tavern and Grill brings Greek flavors and styles to American classics for a more cultural mix. Legacy Smokehouse offers Central Texan barbecue with their smoked meats. Kuhlwein’s Farm Market and Deli brings local products and vendors to Brown residents. The farmers market runs during the week and offers more than produce, including fresh, hot soups. Tanglewood Plaza is 5 miles from Brown and has a Walmart Supercenter, Target and Meijer. 6 miles away along 270, CAM International Market brings specialty Asian goods to the neighborhood. Kroger is only 6 miles away in Galloway Ridge.
The neighborhood borders Hilliard, giving residents access to its events and celebrations. Freedom Fest takes place on the Fourth of July in Roger A. Reynolds Municipal Park and offers live music, food trucks and games before the fireworks shop. In the winter, the annual tree lighting brings seasonal festivities to the area. “Every five years, we’re trying to do an event at the firehouse to celebrate the building of the fire station,” Sayre says. It has informational centers and a way for the community to get together.
Brown is 14 miles from Columbus, which residents can access via I-70. Because most amenities are located outside of the township’s boundaries, this is a more car-dependent neighborhood. I-270 has many shops and commercial outlets situated along it. “We like being out here,” Sayre says. “We like the peace and serenity.”
