Steady growth from former farmlands

Founded in the 1850s as a railroad waystation, Hilliard is a suburb of Columbus located 13 miles northwest of the state capital. Though originally rural, its population exploded in the 1960s—the result of overflow from the surrounding communities of Dublin, Upper Arlington and Clintonville. Since then, job opportunities and a highly ranked school system have given Hilliard the same steady growth as its neighbors.

Historic homes and brand-new estates

The median price for homes is in the low $400,000s, higher than the Columbus median in the high $200,000s and comparable to the national median price in the low $400,000s. "We're seeing a really strong demand for single-family housing and a market that is only constrained by supply," says Dan Ralley, Hilliard's assistant city manager.

Old Hilliard has most of the area's historic homes, some dating back to the 1800s. Midcentury-era houses are more prominent in southern neighborhoods like Luxair or Roman Hill Estates. As the city expands, the newest homes are on the western side of Hilliard.

Hilliard has several business headquarters, including The Baesman Group and Eco Plumbers. Sutphen Corporation—the oldest fire truck manufacturer in the country—also has a major production center in the city. According to Ralley, the city is seeing substantial growth in the research and development sector, including a partnership with a series of startup engineering companies.

Live events at Hilliard's Station Park

Hilliard's Recreation and Parks Department has hundreds of acres of public land across 25 parks. One of the city's most beloved public parks is Hilliard's Station Park, built at the site of the original town square. "It's the center of the community in the summer months with splash fountains, outdoor seating and an amphitheater," Ralley says.

City focus on the arts

Hilliard's Public Arts Commission is a collection of local artists and educators who help the City Council find and fund appropriate art for the city. "They've already set aside a budget for more public art installations," Ralley says. Festivals and occasions are also very popular in the area. "We have over 20 annual events," says David Ball, the community relations manager of Hilliard. "Our summer concert series and a winter tree lighting, just to name a couple."

"We have major shopping centers anchored by full-service grocery stores," says Ralley. "We also have quite a few Middle Eastern and Mediterranean restaurants that are quietly fantastic." The area's downtown has also transformed in recent years, bringing new businesses and restaurants. "It's becoming a destination for people in and out of the community," says Ball.

Easy access to John Glenn Airport

Interstates 70 and 270 are major thoroughfares in the area. "Traffic is pretty reasonable here," Ralley says. "Primary access to I-270 is at Cemetery Road, so that area can get pretty congested, but it looks very good compared to bigger cities." The John Glenn Columbus International Airport is 20 miles east and has nearly 150 non-stop flights daily. Hilliard has public transportation provided by the Central Ohio Transit Authority. Hilliard's closest hospital is OhioHealth Dublin Methodist Hospital, 5 miles north.

One of the best school districts in the Columbus area

Niche gives Hilliard City School District an A-minus, naming it one of the best school districts in the Columbus area and one of the ten best school districts for athletes in the state. "The top reason people move here is for the school district," Ralley says.

Low crime, moderate environmental risk

According to FBI data, Hilliard sees less violent and property crime than both Ohio and the United States. "It's a very safe community," Ball says. "Any time we do surveys, people tell us how happy they are with the police and fire department."

Hilliard has warm, muggy summers and cold, wet winters with little risk from environmental factors like flooding.

An OSU-backed health and wellness facility

The Well, a health facility, is anticipated to open in mid-2025. It will have fitness rooms, a gymnasium and an extensive aquatic space. Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center will run a health and wellness center in the facility that offers physical therapy and other treatment options. "Our first, second and third priority right now is getting The Well built," Ralley says.
