Lake Houston is a growing suburb just north of its namesake city's downtown area
A booming community in Atascocita, a census-designated place in Harris County, Lake Houston offers waterside living and quiet suburban vibes about a 25-mile drive from downtown Houston. "Lake Houston is about five different communities all geographically defined by Lake Houston at large," says local Realtor Deborah Rose Miller of Rose Realty, who has sold dozens of homes around the Lake Houston area. "It's not a postal thing. It's just a regional definition." In essence, Lake Houston's distinctive communities share a similar relationship to that of New York City's five boroughs. "People in the Bronx don't always know what Brooklyn is doing, and people in Kingwood don't always pay attention to what's going on in Humble."

Lake Houston contains numerous large, waterside properties
In Lake Houston, New Traditional-style homes sit alongside Tudor Revivals and Colonial Revivals, though there are also some smaller ranch-style properties with brick facades mixed in. They say everything is bigger in Texas, and some of the larger homes backing up to the water around Lake Houston are good illustrations of this adage. Many homes in the area price between $300,000 and $500,000, though larger residents on big, sprawling lots with lake access can sell for well over $1 million. Given the neighborhood's proximity to the water, it's not uncommon for some Lake Houston homes to only last a few weeks on the market.

Lake Houston is a destination for fishing and kayaking
Hubs for outdoor recreation are only a short drive away in Lake Houston. The fishing pier in the Waters Edge community is a top spot to reel in bass and take in picturesque views of the sunset, while the nearby Atascocita Golf Club is a staple for local golfers. Of course, the lake is a major draw to the area, but according to Realtor Susan Brown of Keller Williams Realty, who has over 20 years of experience in real estate, the lake is shallow, so those with larger boats will likely need to dock at Lake Conroe, a 48-mile drive north of Lake Houston.

FM 1960 is also lined with national chain restaurants, though locally owned eateries stand out amongst the pack. On Lake Houston Parkway, Iguana Joe's is a top spot for Mexican fare, while Sweet Land serves sweet drinks and ice cream.

FM 1960 connects locals to one of Houston's major highways
Without reliable public transportation options, most Lake Houston residents are car-dependent. However, the neighborhood offers strong access to major roads with FM 1960 and Lake Houston Parkway both running through the community. The George Bush Intercontinental Airport is also just a 10-mile drive west. Those working in Houston can get to the city in about 35 minutes by traveling west on Will Clayton Parkway and merging onto Interstate 69, which feeds directly into downtown.
