Narrow strip of neighborhood can have broad appeal for those who love art and small-town vibes
Hill Park is a long horizontal neighborhood strip from 18th Street to 23rd Street just south of Independence's vibrant Englewood Arts District. Creative energy surrounds Hill Park, from the Englewood Arts District at its north end to the headquarters of Kansas City PBS at the southern end. Located just 3 miles from the small-town-feel, history-packed Independence Square, Hill Park is only 10 miles from bustling Downtown Kansas City. "Independence is a quieter, quainter area than Kansas City," says lifelong resident Marla Jones.

Mondays off at area schools, for now
Children can walk to Korte Elementary School before moving to Clifford H. Nowlin Middle School. Both schools receive a C from Niche. High Schoolers can attend C-plus-rated Van Horn High School, where robotics team members can mentor elementary and middle school students interested in robotics. In 2023-2024, the Independence School District switched to a 4-day school week. Missouri voters will decide whether this will remain an option for the 2025-2026 school year. "The days are a little longer, and they take Mondays off," says Van Horn graduate Jones. "Some teachers from the highly rated Grain Valley District have transferred to Independence to take advantage of the four-day school week," Jones says.

Skaters flock to Hill Park to practice trickiest moves
Hill Park's namesake park lies along the southern border at the neighborhood's east end. It includes a playground, a rock creek and a dog park. However, the biggest draw for skaters is the 10,000-square-foot concrete skate park. They can use the park's advanced features, including stairs, rails and grind blocks, to perfect their latest street skating moves. Rotary Park is a small park on the other side of 23rd Street. It features a playground, splash pad and walking trails. The Highland Cemetery and Kehilath Israel Blue Ridge Cemetery are in the west part of the neighborhood, bisected by Blue Ridge Blvd.
