Crown Hill has fixer-uppers and historic homes near major attractions
Crown Hill is an evolving neighborhood on the north side of Indianapolis. It’s anchored by Crown Hill Cemetery, the largest cemetery in the city and a popular place to jog and walk. The mix of homes ranges from total fixer-uppers to historic estates in the Golden Hill Historic District, all close to parks, green spaces and major attractions like the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and Newfields. Crown Hill is also part of the emerging Indy Health District, an Indiana University Health-led effort to improve public health through housing, food access, walkability and economic opportunities.

Exploring Crown Hill Cemetery, plus a mix of parks and attractions
There’s nothing spooky about a stroll through Crown Hill Cemetery. Walkers and bikers enjoy the cemetery’s rolling hills, shady trees and Gothic architecture. “The cemetery has a really big collection of flora,” says Faith Thompson, public relations and communications manager for Downtown Indy and a resident of nearby Butler-Tarkington/Rocky Ripple. “Their trees and flowers are a big feature. The walkability might sound weird, but they made it really great.” Locals also love jogging and biking along the Fall Creek Trail. The White River borders the neighborhood, and locals can stop by Frank’s Paddlesports Livery to rent canoes and kayaks. There's also golf courses like the private Woodstock Club and the public Coffin Club. Other green spaces and attractions include:
Bertha Ross Park, which comes with a playground, splash pad and Tea’s Me Community Café
Tarkington Park, a family favorite with an updated playground, climbing areas and sports courts and a huge athletic field
Newfields, which is home to a beloved art museum and sculpture-filled nature park

Different home styles and prices, including historic homes
The neighborhood mostly has early 20th-century styles like bungalows, cottages and American Foursquares on compact lots. Some of the neighborhood’s larger homes have been split into multifamily units. Street parking is standard, but many homes also have detached garages or carriage houses out back. If you’re willing to take on a fixer-upper, you can find them starting around $20,000 and up to the mid-$100,000s. Most homes cost between the mid-$100,000s and the low $300,000s, depending on renovations. Crown Hill also includes the Golden Hill Historic District, a small pocket of just over 50 homes between the cemetery and the White River. This affluent corner of the neighborhood is known for its stylish homes on large, wooded parcels. Homes in this section can range from $500,000 to the mid-$600,000s.

Indy Health District partnerships guide the area’s next chapter
For more than 25 years, the TenPoint Coalition has contributed to the area with community outreach, neighborhood patrols and collaborations with local police. The neighborhood’s next chapter includes becoming part of the Indy Health District, a new initiative led by IU Health alongside partners like Ivy Tech, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and nearby neighborhood associations. In addition to medical care, the initiative helps the community with housing, food access, walkability and economic opportunities. One highlight is the Floating Farmers Market, a rotating market that brings fresh produce and free health screenings to the area.
James Whitcomb Riley School 43 fosters a safe and nurturing learning environment.
School options include public, private and charter choices
Families have public, private and charter school options in the area. Most students attend schools in the Indianapolis Public Schools system, which has open choice for magnet schools and special programs through a lottery. Private options include St. Richard’s Episcopal School, which serves students up to eighth grade. Herron Preparatory Academy is a charter school for kids in kindergarten through eighth grade, and Indiana School for the Deaf is in Meridian Kessler. Ivy Tech Community College has a campus at the southern edge of the neighborhood. Butler University is also nearby, offering education and entertainment at Clowes Memorial Hall and Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Hank's Smoked Brisket is a favorite carry-out spot in Crown Hill.
Small shops and 38th Street chains serve daily neighborhood needs
“Inside the neighborhood there’s smaller businesses and little restaurants and services,” Thompson says. “It ties into the 38th Street corridor,” which is lined with fast-food restaurants and counter service chains. You can order carry-out at Hank’s Smoked Briskets, which serves up Texas-style barbecue and comforting sides. In neighboring Riverside, Cleo’s Bodega Grocery and Café serves as a vital food hub in Indy’s largest food desert.
Easy commutes and access to public transportation
Interstate 65 borders the neighborhood. Drivers can get to Downtown Indy in less than 15 minutes. IndyGo has bus stops throughout the neighborhood. A handful of roads like Capitol Avenue and Illinois Street have bike lanes. IU Health Methodist Hospital is about 2 miles south.

i think the crime rate near by is pretty ridiculous but over where i am closer to the cemetery is very quiet and all my neighbors are friendly as well.
