Sunshine Gardens in Indianapolis is a rural community bordered by the White River and Interstate 465. Originally developed in the 1920s with the promise of spacious 2-acre lots for raising farm animals, the neighborhood maintains its rustic charm with original bungalows featuring garages, sheds and private wells. However, newer homes built in the 2000s are organized more closely together and offer three to four bedrooms. Shopping and amenities are not available within the neighborhood, so residents often travel to Southport, downtown Indianapolis or Greenwood. Dining options include Mel’s Drive-In, a nostalgic spot with carhop service, and Pasquale’s Pizza, known for its Stromboli Steakhouse and Buddza pizza. Groceries are available at a nearby Kroger on Southport Road. Students can attend highly rated schools, including Perry Meridian High, which offers a variety of extracurricular activities. The 587-acre Southwestway Park provides bike trails, hiking paths, horseback riding and the Winding River Golf Course, which has an 18-hole circuit that's open to the public. Concerns have been raised about air and groundwater quality in the area due to coal ash from nearby power plants.
