Inkster offers affordable homes 20 miles from downtown Detroit
Inkster is a modest community of Detroit's western suburbs. It’s a common landing spot for those seeking a more affordable home, while still being within driving distance of downtown, approximately 20 miles away. Home prices are significantly lower than in other communities in the region, such as Dearborn and Westland, two major commercial hubs that connect to Inkster via Michigan Avenue.
The only remaining symbol of the eponymous Inkster saw mill is the city's insignia.
Michigan Ave is the main artery through Inkster and connects the city to Detroit.

Homes cost significantly less than in other surrounding suburbs
The median home sale price is around $110,000, significantly lower than that of bordering communities, such as Garden City and Romulus, where the medians exceed $200,000. “From an investment standpoint, there are a lot of people who purchase these homes and rent them out,” says Andy Whisler, a Realtor with Community Choice Realty, who has been selling homes in the area since 2010. More than half of Inkster’s residents rent their homes, most of which date back to the early to mid-1900s. They include ranch-style houses, small bungalows and Colonial Revivals, some of which need renovations, and others that have been updated by investors. You’ll also find several empty lots, which range from around $20,000 to $70,000.
Comfortable ranch homes with unassuming exteriors can be found throughout Inkster.
Larger architectural styles in Inkster lean into colonial and split-level floor plans.

Students are zoned to one of five school districts
Several school districts serve the community:
Crestwood School District
Garden City Public Schools
Taylor School District
Wayne-Westland Community School District
Westwood Community School DistrictCrestwood School District is the highest rated of the bunch, and David Hicks Elementary School and Daly Elementary School are both walkable from the community.
Easy commutes to downtown Detroit, even during rush hour
It’s about a 4-mile drive to Interstate 94, which commuters take to downtown Detroit. “During rush hour, it takes about 25 minutes. Otherwise, it’s a 15-minute drive,” Whisler says. For public transportation, locals can take a Smart bus on Michigan Avenue to downtown. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is about 6 miles away. Inkster is on the flight path of the airport, so it’s common to see and hear planes flying overhead at low altitudes.
Most stores and restaurants are in nearby Dearborn
Michigan Avenue is Inkster’s main thoroughfare, which locals use to travel to Dearborn, a city with dozens of big-box retailers and grocery stores. Some of the closest options include Kroger, Marshalls and The Home Depot. There’s also a Dollar General in Inkster, along with some locally owned restaurants. Nearby favorites include Westpoint BBQ, which has been a community staple since 1985. Dearborn’s dining scene reflects its history as a mosaic of cultures, expanding to Inkster and other nearby towns. Options include Al Tayeb Restaurant, known for its Lebanese food, and Al Sultan Restaurant, which offers a wide range of Middle Eastern dishes.
Bordering Inkster is the original location of the Dearborn-favorite AlTayeb Restaurant.

Indoor and outdoor recreational activities in Inkster
There are several spots in the community where locals can get active.

A rich culture with annual community events
Inkster maintains a strong sense of community by gathering at Booker T. Dozier Recreation Center for events, including an Easter egg hunt, a Halloween party and an annual holiday celebration. Inkster’s place in civil rights history has had a long lasting impact on the community. It’s known to have been one of the last stops on the Underground Railroad for the 45,000 enslaved people who escaped to Canada to gain freedom. In 1952, civil rights leader Malcolm X lived with his brother’s family in a house on Williams Street. The home was recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, clearing the way for the Inkster-based nonprofit Project We Hope, Dream and Believe to revitalize the once-abandoned home into a museum. The nonprofit purchased three adjacent lots, where plans are underway to construct a community center and a job training/youth tutorial center. A grant from the National Park Service African American Civil Rights program is helping to develop the organization’s vision.
The Underground Railroad had an Inkster stop when Wesleyan Methodist Church was on Michigan Ave.
