An inviting town in the foothills, with homes sitting on Lake Bowen, Inman residents say the area lives up to its motto – small town, big heart. “People are moving to Inman to be close to the Blue Ridge Mountains and for the hometown, community feel,” says Traci Brock, a Realtor with Re/MAX. “You’re not in the hustle and bustle of the city, so you’re able to enjoy privacy at many of the homes in Inman.” Decorated storefronts, locally owned eateries and vibrant events add to the area’s tight-knit community feel.

Locally owned eateries with vintage feel
Inman’s historic Main Street District is made up of multi-colored industrial brick buildings housing local restaurants and shops. Murals dot the town to give it some life, and Brock says, “The sidewalks are wide, making it easy to explore the area by foot. There’s also a biking lane. The town has made downtown people and dog friendly.” The Crepe Factory and The Upstate Coffee offer warm, inviting atmospheres where locals stop to get sweet or savory crepes with a cup of coffee. Live music is the main attraction at Inman Beer Vault, a cozy bar with exposed brick walls. Regulars pull up a seat at the bar to order a craft beer or cider. Less than a block away is Kempson Rexall Drugs. Taking a step inside will feel like taking a step back in time. The pharmacy and soda fountain shop serves hot dogs and milkshakes. Vintage shops and boutiques, like Honey Child Specialty Children’s Shop and Alli’s on Main, may appeal to shoppers looking for clothes, furniture and home décor with a Southern flair. To find grocery stores, locals will have to drive to Asheville Highway. Along with a Food Lion, the road is flanked by hardware and supply stores for everyday essentials.

Harvest Fest and Friday night concert series
Main and Mill streets get packed in September when the town’s Harvest Day draws thousands of visitors wanting to check out the goods sold by artists and craftsmen, food and music. On Friday nights throughout the summer, head to the Mill Street Stage for a concert series and food trucks galore – Crazy Good Kettle Corn, Yum Bai Noodles, Rollin’ Cuban and Real McCoy’s BBQ – to name a few.

Mix of early 20th-century homes and new builds
Streets throughout Inman are hilly, and many are without sidewalks, reminiscent of the town’s milling and railroad history. The town can be divided between older homes with vintage charm and custom builds with modern features. There are Prairie-style and Victorian farmhouses dating back to the early 1900s perched on small hillsides with mountain views along Inman’s outskirts. Moving closer to the historic Main Street District, ranch and brick new traditional homes line cul-de-sac subdivisions. “Most of the time, you’ll be on at least half-acre lots, which is another big plus for homebuyers,” Brock says. Waterfront views and private dock access are made possible at houses on Lake Bowen, which sits on Inman’s northern end.

After outgrowing Inman High School, the town built Chapman High, known for its state championship-winning football team – most recently in 2019 after going undefeated. The high school also has a robust arts program with an award-winning band and orchestra.

Life on the lake and plans for expansive trails
Lake Bowen offers 33 miles of shoreline, and the water gets packed with boats, jet skis and people water skiing or tubing. A public boat ramp can be found at Anchor Park just off Highway 9. The small park also has designed spots for fishing and a playground. “Lake Bowen differs from the other nearby lake, Lake Cooley, where you can take out small boats,” Brock says. Several parks are scattered throughout Inman, and more are being developed. Leroy Mathis Park was renovated in 2020 and has two covered playgrounds. Inman Mills Park is a hub for youth baseball and softball games. A basketball court and playground are also on the grounds. Plans are in the works to build a greenway spanning from Inman to Zirconia, North Carolina. The Saluda Grade Railroad, part of which runs through Inman’s Main Street District, has not been used since 2001. The town plans to pull up the tracks and create a 31-mile-long walking and biking trail.
