Historic railroad becomes bustling city south of Baltimore

When the B&O Railroad decided to lay its tracks through the middle of Jessup, a community was born. In 1833, Jonathan Jessup planned and completed the excavation of over 270,000 cubic yards of earth which led to the name “Jessup’s Cut”. Today, Jessup is known as a “residential community with a small-town vibe,” says Brian Pakulla, Realtor with RE/MAX Advantage. “It’s got some older homes from the 80s and 90s, and it's close to Route 1 and the I-95 corridor, which makes it good for commutes. It is 15 minutes to BWI Airport and located on I-95. You can't beat the location!” The average home price in Jessup is around $530,000, which is higher than in nearby neighborhoods like Elkridge, Hanover and Maryland City. Most residents shop along Rouse Parkway or spend days inside at many indoor attractions like Monster Mini Golf and Arcade. Depending on their address, students may study within Howard County Public Schools, which is graded an overall A-plus on Niche, or within Anne Arundel County Public Schools, graded a B.

Brand new constructions in Savage and established homes in Jessup

Depending on the part of Jessup locals are in, the housing styles and costs will vary greatly. Residences east of Waterloo Road near Wigley Avenue mainly consist of more renovated ranch-style homes and Cape Cods, as well as brand-new suburban homes. Established houses date back to the 1950s, costing between $350,000 and $550,000, while newer constructions were built between 2017 and 2023, and can reach as high as $900,000. The majority of dwellings near Guildford Park in Savage are new constructions with traditional elements like brick and vinyl siding, two-to-three-car garages and four or more bedrooms. These suburban homes cluster together in communities like Greenwood Village and Heritage Woods. Prices range between $750,000 and nearly $1 million. The 55 and older community of Jones Station has a few condos and townhouses with three bedrooms and attached garages, often costing around $500,000.

They can then move on to either Thomas Viaduct Middle School or Oakland Mills Middle School for sixth through eighth grade. Oakland Mills High School is the No. 6 most diverse public high school in Maryland, known for its college prep courses and athletic programs. All four schools are graded an A-minus on Niche. For students who attend Anne Arundel County Public Schools, they may first start at Jessup Elementary School, which is graded a B-minus. Meade Middle School, graded a C, includes Spanish, band and strings classes. Meade High School has an active theater department and an Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Club (AANHPI). Commutes to downtown Baltimore and Washington D.C.

Rouse Parkway is the major thoroughfare that connects Jessup and Colombia, though it does create a lot of noise pollution for area homes. Also, no bus lines run along that route, so most locals will drive. The B&O Rail Line still runs through the area, with a stop right on Jessup Road. Those who live east of the train tracks may experience coastal flooding from the Anne Arundel County shoreline. Locals are about 16 miles south of downtown Baltimore, which they can reach via Interstate 95. On the way, they’ll pass the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, which is about 9 miles from Jessup. Washington D.C. is about 26 miles south of Jessup and can be reached via the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

Shopping centers and local restaurants off Rouse Parkway

Though most of the neighborhood is made up of industrial sites and warehouses, Columbia Crossing and Dobbin Center are both major shopping spots nearby. With dozens of familiar chain and big-box grocery stores, such as Walmart and Target, locals can attend to all their needs within 5 miles of most homes. Scattered around town are several interesting eateries that are tucked away in Jessup. Wayne’s Hot Dog Stand has been run by the man himself for about 30 years on Oceano Avenue under the local water tower. Wayne serves up hot dogs in Chicago and pizza styles for locals and returning tourists alike. Roggenart European Bakery, Bistro & Cafe has fresh coffee and pastries. Royal Taj Restaurant has upscale Indian cuisine in an elegant atmosphere. Once known as Stanford Grill, Glenwood's has live jazz, patio seating and specialties such as wood-fired rotisserie chicken and crafted cocktails. The Market Place on Washington Boulevard is home to the area’s massive indoor/outdoor farmers market, which has hundreds of vendors selling produce, homemade goods and household items.

Indoor attractions in Jessup and nearby Colombia

The local Monster Mini Golf and Arcade on Columbia Road is a fun and creepy indoor destination, with a glow-in-the-dark 18-hole course, laser tag, bowling and arcade games. “I feel like in this area, there are a lot of kids but not a lot of things to do inside,” says Natalie Hume, a Jessup local and the general manager of Monster Mini Golf and Arcade. “During summer, when the weather’s hot, this is a great place for them to hang out... We have a lot of people who will come in for field trips and work events or team-building activities.” The Soccer Dome sports complex features an indoor turf for all types of play. Locals can sign up for a clinic, a league, or attend one of their weekly drop-in sessions. For outdoor adventures, locals can walk along several paved paths at Guilford Park, which also has a gazebo overlooking the pond. Jessup Park’s playground includes slides and swings, and the nearby field space can be used for pickup soccer games or picnics. In nearby Savage, locals can walk the trails behind Stone Lake, or play outside at Savage Park’s playground, sports fields and tennis courts.

Combating homelessness in Howard County

The Path Home, which began in 2020, is Howard County’s pledge and strategic plan to end homelessness in the area. "The community is very giving, especially in this area there are a lot of homeless people living around the shopping center,” Hume says. “I see people doing what they can for them. I saw a kid bring out a meal to a homeless man and sit with him for a while. It’s a generous area." As of 2022, the project has seen 93% or more households that were in supportive housing retain permanent housing through the program. Jessup is also home to the Jessup Correctional Institution and the Clifton T. Perkins Psychiatric Hospital.
