In the late 1800s, Italian immigrants settled in Thornton for its textile mill and produce farms. Towards the 1950s, the Johnston neighborhood abandoned its industrial roots as it began developing into a residential enclave. “This is a classic Johnston community because the midcentury homes are in great condition,” says Ken Scotti, a broker associate with RE/MAX Properties who has sold several homes in the area. “Plus, you’ve got easy highway access, so Providence is only about 15 minutes away.” Efforts to build upon the area's history has come in the form of converting old mills into luxury apartments.

Thorton is a midcentury neighborhood near Providence
Thornton’s wide, paved roads are lined with various three-to-four-bedroom dwellings. Raised ranch styles have one-to-two-car garages tucked underneath, and Cape Cod cottages feature private driveways. Colonial Revivals on quarter-acre lots and split levels with low-sloping roofs are also common designs for the area. No matter the style, a home here typically costs between $250,000 and $450,000, a range similar to a Providence home’s average $400,000 selling price. “Johnston is a fast-selling area in general because of how close it is to Providence,” says Scotti. “Houses in this neighborhood are rarely on the market for over three weeks.”

The 88-acre Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy is in the neighborhood's eastern region. “This is a popular hiking spot for everyone in the Providence area,” says Scotti. “It’s known for its amazing views that you really can’t find anywhere else in the city.” The forested knoll is the highest point in the Providence metropolitan area, offering a panoramic downtown outlook. Visitors will pass a playground, a pond and a skatepark at the base of the hill. A dense canopy of oak and hickory trees shades nature trails, where wild turkeys and pheasants are often spotted. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers also frequent the area when winter comes around. Bleachers surrounding the grass baseball diamonds fill with Little League spectators every summer. Residents will find even more amenities at the Vincent Igliozzi Recreation Center, including an outdoor swimming pool and an indoor basketball court.
