New arrivals in historical Johnstown

Johnstown’s signature bell tower signals steady timelessness at the core of this small Licking County city. It’s home to several buildings dating back to its establishment in the early 1800s on the National Register of Historic Places. As interest in the city grows, outcroppings of brand-new subdivisions continue to pop up around the older homes and local businesses on Main Street. Rolling farmland and wooded lots extend beyond the city limits on the path to Columbus.

How Johnstown businesses build community

Johnstown thrives through its local businesses, according to city native Scott Ashbrook. He established Alley Art Studios 13 years ago to meet a pressing need: children’s art classes, absent from nearby elementary and middle schools until very recently. “I teach the kids how to use all kinds of mediums and how to structure a piece and a project,” Ashbrook says. “Word of mouth is the best advertisement here. I have a few moms who just talk me up to their friends, and they make my business thrive. It’s a small-town atmosphere.”

The Main Street stretch is at the epicenter of the community, both physically and socially. Locals can catch up with each other while picking up their morning coffee at Leonard’s Coffee Roasting Co. and have their company dinners at the elegant Ghostwriter Public House. And like any small town, it has its local legends. “Villa Pizza is a hometown favorite of everybody,” says Ashbrook about Johnnies Villa Pizza, Johnstown’s local spot for a pie since 1973. “I know people who will go out of town and can’t find anything like it, so when they return, they say, ‘We have to get some Villa Pizza!’” Residents can shop big box at the Kroger on the southwest end or pick up fresh baked goods and deli meats and cheeses at Troyer’s Marketplace, a community grocery staple.

A historic Opera House and events on Main Street

The historic Old Johnstown Courthouse is a meeting place for the community with an Opera House on the second floor. As one of only five remaining opera houses in Ohio, the room represents Johnstown’s deep communal roots and provides 325 seats worth of space for weddings, graduation ceremonies, auctions and more. An annual “I’ll be Home for Christmas” event and Tree Lighting Ceremony also takes place each year, setting the community aglow.

Main Street homes meet new developments

Homes in Johnstown follow a clear historical trajectory. Preservationists looking for a fixer-upper have Queen Anne Revival and American Foursquare homes built in the early-to-mid 1900s to choose from on the main stretch; prices range from $275,000 to $425,000. Split levels, ranch-styles and Cape Cods from the 1950s and 60s have been brought up to modern standards and sell for $350,000 to $460,000. For those who want brand-new everything, surrounding subdivisions with manicured lots and sleek Modern Craftsman homes are the city’s newest arrivals averaging $450,000.

Schools in the Johnstown-Monroe School District

The Leafy Dell residential subdivision forms a ring around Johnstown Elementary School on the north end of the city, so some kids are literally steps away from its front doors. The school earns an A-minus from Niche. Johnstown-Monroe Middle School earns a B-plus and sits across a field from Johnstown-Monroe High School, the home of the Fighting Johnnies, which earns a B.

Traversing the TJ Evans Bike Path or exploring Bigelow Park

Johnstown is a starting point for the 14.3-mile TJ Evans Bike Path that drops cyclists off in Newark, Ohio. Other green spaces break up the largely residential landscape with places to meet outside local shops and businesses, like Bigelow Park, which surrounds the Monroe Township Hall.

Getting from Johnstown to Columbus and beyond

While locals can make it through the Main Street shopping areas on foot, most residents own cars. U.S. Highway 62 and Ohio State route 37 intersect at Johnstown, leading to downtown Delaware to the northwest and Columbus to the southwest; both trips map out at about 25 miles. Visitors arrive at the John Glenn Columbus International Airport 20 miles away.

Intel’s impact on the Johnstown community

The arrival of Intel’s “mega-site” data center just outside Johnstown has stirred up mixed feelings among residents. “We’re going through growing pains,” Ashbrook admits. “A lot of people don’t want change, but many are happy because businesses and restaurants are going to pick up as a result. I say embrace it and focus on the attention it draws to our city.”
