History meets the modern trendy in Old Westport
One of Kansas City's oldest neighborhoods, Old Westport's historic buildings and vintage vibe have been given new life by a dynamic community, drawing in locals and tourists for its top-notch restaurants, eclectic shops and artistic scene. It's found near the Kansas-Missouri state line, just under 3 miles from downtown KC. "It's one of the most walkable neighborhoods in Kansas City, first of all. Westport just oozes charm – I love that it attracts such vibrant people," says Becky Hopkins, Realtor with Hills Real Estate. She's been selling homes and lived in the Old Westport area for two decades. "The vibe is so good, and you've got people coming in with great ideas and making things happen. I think it will always be developing in some sense, but that history makes it hold strong."
A thriving and eclectic food and shopping scene
Residents can walk for daily essentials, from the Sun Fresh Market at Mill Street Station to the CVS at the corner of 39th and Main Street. Old Westport's most significant appeal is in the locally owned and independent, the artistic vibe and excellent restaurant scene. Music lovers flock to the live music sets at the Tin Roof and aisles of pressed vinyl at the Mills Record Company, while Westport Ale House serves craft beers to patrons watching the game on the bar TVs. At night, patrons fill the iconic Kelly's Westport Inn with the buzz of chatter and dancing, drinking and hanging out in what is said to be the oldest building in KC. "The food scene in Westport is amazing. I love Westport Café, it's got great French food and is nominated for a James Beard," Hopkins says. "My favorite has to be Pot Pie, though. I've been going there for years; they have the best waffles."
Old Westport has a ton of great retailer and eateries.

Vintage Craftsmen and modern condos
Old Westport dates back to the early 19th century, and some homes still stand from between 1900 and 1930. It's a unique mix of painted vintage homes and new, contemporary condos, with sidewalks lining all residential streets to assist walkability. Craftsman four-squares reign supreme when it comes to architectural style, and large brick Colonials have been transformed into duplexes. "There's a lot of porch-sitting there, and the combination of generational homeowners and new renters is cool," Hopkins says. "It's normal for developers to latch onto popular areas, so the mix of new builds with the old homes is interesting. Nothing stays on the market long." Modern two-bedroom condos start selling around $300,000, and three-bedroom Craftsman homes or bungalows – if maintained or renovated – typically sell between $350,000 and $400,000.
Westport has many brightly colored homes lining the neighborhood streets.

Taking a stroll through Mill Creek Park
Nearby Mill Creek Park is one of KC's most beloved parks, with paved trails winding down the 11 acres of green space. There are exercise stations set up and plenty of benches for watching the world go by. Heading south down Mill Creek Parkway, the park ends with a huge fountain and the Plaza Tennis Center. Old Westport is also the site of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fountain, where a memorial wall accompanies a fountain that feeds a nearby reflection pool.

Celebrating the arts and St. Paddy's with Old Westport
With an artistic community, Old Westport showcases regional creators' visual art at the annual "Art Westport" exhibition. Artists set up their booths and present works of paintings, jewelry, sculpting, ceramics, and various other forms. The neighborhood also hosts Kansas City's biggest St. Patrick's Day celebration, where thousands enjoy local food vendors, beer gardens, live music and pop-up cafés. It all happens around the anticipated St. Patrick's Parade, which shuts down several streets and ends at Old Westport's well-known 43rd Street.
Education with the KCSD
