Good times are coming right on Kew

Named after a prominent London botanic garden, Kew Gardens provides with residents with no shortage of green spaces. Nor do locals have to worry about a shortage of living options, with single-family homes, townhouses, condos and co-ops lining the streets, many with spectacular views. “One thing you’ve got to realize about Kew Gardens is depending on where you live, you can see the Manhattan Skyline because it’s hilly. Buyers in Queens find those city views very desirable,” says Chatter Singh, a Realtor with Keller Williams who has been selling properties for 10 years. Singh grew up close by in southeast Richmond Hill and has remained a Queens resident since. “The fact that Kew Gardens borders North Richmond Hill makes it more desirable, so home prices are higher than in adjacent areas. And it has the largest courthouse in Queens. If you’re going to get married or pay a parking ticket or do any other court business, you’re going to do it here.” Condos and co-ops start around $160,000 while 3-bedroom detached houses start around $900,000.

Condos, townhouses and “mansions”

“There’s a large variety of housing options,” Singh says. “You have condominium complexes, and more in comparison to other areas of Queens; you have co-op apartments with a lot of indoor amenities; and you also have townhouses, single-family dwellings and multi-family dwellings.” Homebuyers can expect to pay around $160,000 for a studio condo, while units with two or more bedrooms creep into the $300,000s, though they should also keep HOA fees in mind, which can be hefty in established buildings. Singh highlights Kew Gardens’ diversity of detached, single-family homes, noting there are even options on the higher end with private parking and 3 bedrooms, all the way up to 6 or 7. “We call them ‘mansions,’” he says. That nickname is not misleading, many following palatial Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival designs, with half-timbered walls and traced windowpanes, and selling for around $1.5 million. More modest homes with 1,500 square feet of space yet 3 to 5 bedrooms can sell for around $900,000.

International eating and shopping

There’s no shortage of eating options in Kew Gardens and the surrounding areas. “You have a large number of Jewish delis and Russian kosher restaurants but also Haitian, French, Hispanic, Italian and West Indian places,” Singh says, highlighting Tikka Indian Grill and Spolini’s in particular. Residents can start the day at Baker’s Dozen Bagels for breakfast and celebrate Friday night at 718 Lounge or Austin’s Ale House. For groceries, residents can pick from larger supermarket chains like CTown and Key Food or shop locally at Y & M Glatt Mini Mart and Alba’s Deli and Grocery.
