Kihei offers laid-back Hawaiian living on Maui's sunniest coastline
Kihei is the main city center on Maui's southwest shore, which stretches from Kihei down to the luxurious resorts of Wailea and the secluded coastline of Makena. The Four Seasons Maui at Wailea — the filming location for season one of HBO's "White Lotus" — and Waldorf Astoria's Grand Wailea reside on this drier southwest shore because of the year-round sunshine. "I moved here for the weather, but we stay for the people," says Realtor Tom Tezak with Hawaii Life, who's been selling here since 2000. Whether residents live in a one-bedroom bungalow or a $20 million mansion, they're here for the same lifestyle. "We are a melting pot of positive mental attitudes. If you wore a suit and tie, people would think you were from another planet," Tezak says. "Our lifestyle is the beach, hiking, golf and pickleball — 365 days a year." Residents enjoy a laid-back lifestyle in a luxury resort-worthy setting.

Everything from condos and golf course suburbs to oceanfront mansions
Kihei and Wailea-Makena's modern development began in the 1970s, with single-family homes, condos and vacation rentals following through the '80s and '90s. Today, most homes are in traditional Hawaiian subdivisions with palm trees lining the roads. Small one-bedroom homes and more spacious Hawaiian plantation-style homes range from $450,000 to $1.2 million. Multimillion-dollar homes exist throughout Kihei and Wailea-Makena, but most are concentrated between the two towns, close to Wailea's world-renowned resorts. Larger homes with breezy lanais — outdoor living areas, synonymous with Hawaiian architecture — and contemporary suburban mansions in the Wailea Golf Estates can cost $1.2 million to $4 million. The most luxurious mansions and opulent one-of-a-kind estates within view of or on the oceanfront reach from $4 million to almost $30 million. Condos also reflect these ranges, with leasehold units and oceanfront living spaces costing $250,000 to $13 million.

Miles of world-famous Maui coastline and top-ranked golf courses
Lush coastline, sandy beaches and shimmering blue waves complete the image of Maui. "The number one best thing about Kihei is that you have proximity to the best beaches on Maui," says Realtor Christopher Barca, a founding member of Compass Hawai'i. Sugar Beach to the north, Kamaole Beach in the heart of Kihei and Wailea Beach in Wailea-Makena are some of the best-known stretches of sand, but there are miles and miles of other oceanfront spots. "It's easy to find a patch of sand in Kihei without fighting for it," Barca says. The Cove at Kalama Park is one of Kihei's best surf breaks. The park itself has tons of green space, courts and athletic fields. Wailea-Makenna's coves, such as Polo Beach, are known for snorkeling. Wailea also hosts Whale Week in February. Humpback whales are the most common species to spot off the coast. Aside from beach activity, golfers can book a tee time at Wailea Golf Club and other world-class courses.
Many parks in Kihei offer sports areas like volleyball and basketball.

Fresh seafood, outdoor markets and resort shopping along the coast
Shopping centers line Kihei Road, providing eateries like Da Kitchen, serving traditional plate lunches. A round-up of food trucks behind Da Kitchen offers global cuisines, except for the Kraken Coffee truck, which brews local Hawaiian beans. Safeway is a few minutes away, next to Kihei Wailea Medical Center, the local hospital. A short drive down Kihei Road leads to South Maui Fish Company, the go-to poke spot. Clothes and collectibles can be found at the open-air vendors in Kihei Kalama Village. Residents in Wailea-Makena are near high-class resort shops and restaurants. The Shops at Wailea have the latest island fashions. This sizable outdoor mall is next to the Wailea Beach Resort-Marriott, Maui.
Shoppers can buy groceries at Safeway at Piilani Village Shops.
Fresh produce is sold daily at Foodland in Kihei.

Students attend each level of school in Kihei
The Hawaii Department of Education serves Maui and all the Hawaiian Islands. Kihei has five schools, all within a mile of each other. Kids can start at Kihei Elementary or Kamali'i Elementary, which are both rated a B. All continue at Lokelani Intermediate, which gets a B-minus. They finish at Kulanihako'i High, which opened in 2023. The brand-new, eco-friendly campus maximizes outdoor space, with study areas like the Learning Stairs and a meditation corner.
Lokulani Intermediate School is located in the heart of Kihei.
Kamali'i Elementary School is located near Piilani Hwy.

The Pi'ilani Highway travels along Maui's southwest shore
Hawaii Route 31, also known as the Pi'ilani Highway, and other connecting roads take drivers along the coast. There are also buses traveling along the coast. Route 31 leads up to Hawaii Route 311, which takes drivers to Kahului, Maui's largest city, less than 15 miles north. Kahului Airport offers flights to the other islands.
Early morning is a great time to enjoy the beach before the crowds arrive.
Kihei and surrounding neighborhoods have miles of scenic shoreline.

Wildfires on Maui
Wildfires are a risk on Maui, and the Maui County Fire Department serves the entire island. The 2023 Lahaina Fire in north Kihei damaged some communities. A brush fire also broke out after high winds in 2024, burning an acre of vacant land.
