A peaceful peninsula
Bordering Oswego Lake and Lakewood Bay, the neighborhood of Lakewood sits on a manmade peninsula on the east end of Lake Oswego. The Oswego area’s residential pockets began to develop in the early 1900s, and its founders used the motto, “live where you play,” drawing on the town’s resort-like atmosphere and recreation opportunities. Walking through the neighborhood takes folks past luxury homes, gated driveways and areas of thick foliage.

Lakefront luxury homes
In Lakewood, you’ll find Craftsman, French and Mediterranean-style houses built in the 1930s and 1940s on quarter- to half-acre homesites where Douglas fir and red-leaf maple trees tower overhead. "The neighborhood's older houses make it look like a European village, says Dianne Gregoire, principal broker with Oregon First Realtors." Stone walls and hedges serve as dividers between front lots and the neighborhood’s quiet streets while beautifully maintained gardens are featured on most properties.
The average listing price here is $1.6 million, over $1 million higher than the Oregon and Portland averages and $700,000 more than the average Lake Oswego home. Over half of Lakewood’s homes sit directly on the water, with private docks allowing for easy lake access. Waterfront homes with three or more bedrooms and over 3,000 square feet can hit the market anywhere from $3 million to $7 million. On the community’s east side, closest to State Street there is a selection of condo buildings, with units ranging from one to three bedrooms and price tags spanning from the low $300,000s to $550,000. "Newer houses have mixed into this neighborhood as the older ones age and are updated or replaced," says Gregoire, referring to the contemporary, Ranch-style and midcentury modern houses dotting the peninsula.

Recreation on Oswego Lake
Those who don’t live directly on the water are still just a short walk away from public swimming areas and lakeside parks. Lake Oswego Swim Park offers residents protected areas for swimming, doing laps and diving in the lake during the summer months. Lakewood is also close to George Rogers Park, a 26-acre green space on the banks of the Willamette River. Sports lovers can use the park’s tennis courts, soccer fields and baseball diamonds. In the warmer months, folks picnic under one of the park’s pavilions and lounge in the sand at its river beach.
