A piece of the past north of Richmond
Lakeside, with its 1950s Cape Cods, economy supported by local businesses and outdoor farmer’s market, has its hands in the pockets of the past. While technically in Henrico County, to Richmond residents, this is the city’s North Side. “Lakeside is its own little community,” says Brinkley Taliaferro Realtor with Shaheen Ruth Martin & Fonville and Richmond native. “It’s a small pocket of Richmond that feels separate.” But access to U.S. interstates 64 and 95 ensures residents can travel through the city with ease.
The neighborhood features a mix of Cape Cods and cottages.

Consignment row on Lakeside Avenue
Local businesses largely support Lakeside’s economy. Richmond restaurants, vintage shops and mechanics line Lakeside Avenue – colloquially called consignment row. “My favorite antique store – RVA Antiques – is in Lakeside,” Taliaferro says. The store sells various one-of-a-kind items, from furniture to clothing, while nearby Twig is a women-owned eclectic shop with unique jewelry, colorful home décor and more. Other thrifty favorites include Whispers of Time, where second-hand items spill over each other in heaps, and JuJuBee’s, with fading boardgames alongside hand-blown glass.
Richmond restaurant round-up
Lakeside is considered a foodie haven by many Richmonders. SB Lakeside Loveshack has a menu inspired by B52’s song titles and an environment influenced by the 1970s. Visitors gather on the dog-friendly patio and order food from the weekly themed menu. “Hobnob is one of my personal favorites over there,” Taliaferro says. And she’s not alone – the place is always packed, especially on Sundays for brunch. Roy’s Big Burger is another local favorite, serving classic American cuisine, while Ariana’s is the spot for Italian. And on the weekends or after work, locals head to Final Gravity Brewing Co., Lakeside’s only brewery.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens and Bryan Park
Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens spans 50 acres with nearly 20 gardens, including an interactive children’s garden and a floating island, where plants clean the water and turtles play. Its glass conservatory has a large dome and expansive wings overlooking the grounds, and, at nighttime, light shines through each windowpane, illuminating the gardens. There are springtime concerts and live butterflies in the summer, but it’s around the holidays that Lewis Ginter truly glows. The Dominion Energy Gardenfest of Lights is a Richmond tradition. Families and first dates wander under colorful light tunnels and watch beams bounce off the water. Inside, little boys and girls hunch over a toy train that loops through an imagined city, and people pose for pictures under the large Christmas tree. Nearby Bryan Park sits on over 200 acres, with two ponds stocked for fishing and greenspace where dogs run off-leash. There are bird-watching groups, disc golf leagues, soccer tournaments and scenic azaleas. “Bryan Park has a Saturday farmer’s market,” Taliaferro explains. “It moved from Forest Hill during Covid to be more spread out, but people liked it in Bryan Park, so they kept it there.”
Disc golf is a popular activity at nearby Bryan Park.

Lakeside’s homes and streets
Above-ground powerlines, bumpy roads without sidewalks, gravel driveways and cars parked on the curb. Mature trees spill over chain link or wooden picket fences in alleyways or on unmarked two-lane roads. Lakeside lots vary in size – some are neat and small, while others have enough space for a backyard soccer game. But most share the same modest home styles – Cape Cods, small cottages, simple bungalows or Craftsman-style homes built in the 1950s and 1960s. Potential homebuyers can snag a fixer-upper for around $250,000 or a house with updated interiors for about $400,000. “Buyers find they can get a little more for their money in Lakeside,” Taliaferro says. Some new builds in the northern part of the neighborhood typically run in the $500,000 range, while condos cost about $300,000.

Lakeside Farmer’s Market
Wicker baskets and wooden crates of fruits and vegetables line blue gingham tablecloths at the Lakeside Farmer’s Market, which occurs Thursday to Sunday year-round. “It’s a smaller farmer’s market,” Taliaferro says. “But very cute.” Under a red awning with exposed white beams like a barn, Lakeside residents browse homegrown goods. They sit under red umbrellas or in lawn chairs, talking to neighbors when they finish shopping.

Transportation
“Lakeside is about 15 to 20 minutes from everything in Richmond,” Taliaferro says. “And, for the most part, you don’t have terrible traffic.” The neighborhood has convenient access to both U.S. Interstate 95 and U.S. Interstate 64, which lead throughout the city of Richmond, Henrico County and across the James River to the Southside. Brook Road is one of the neighborhood’s main thoroughfares, leading to stores like Food Lion and Walmart Supercenter. Following Staples Mill Road, locals can reach Kroger, Hermitage High School and Parham Doctor’s Hospital. And when it’s time to fly, the Richmond International Airport is about 16 miles southeast.
