Quiet community along the mountains
Nestled against its namesake ridge, Green Mountain is a serene community where the closest residents will come to hearing city noise is the chittering of a black-billed magpie as it searches for a snack.
Nestled against its namesake ridge, Green Mountain is a serene community where the closest residents will come to hearing city noise is the chittering of a black-billed magpie as it searches for a snack.
The community is located just minutes from William F Hayden Park, home to the namesake Green Mountain. With a towering 6,800 foot summit, this park provides excellent views of the Denver metro area. At the southern end of the community, Coyote Gulch Park offers 44 acres of park space with a dedicated competition baseball field, a basketball court and a sprawling blue playground with three different kinds of slides. Smaller neighborhood parks like Beech Park and Jackson Park support both pick-up and recreational league sports games, and a community garden at Ute Trail Park brings Green Mountain’s green-thumb crew together to care for fenced-in raised beds surrounded by colorful mosaics and a playground with leaf-shaped details. There are plenty of options around to book a tee time and spend the day on the greens. Residents can become a member and enjoy the hilly course at Bear Creek Golf Club, or head across West Morrison Road for a few rounds at Fox Hollow Golf Course, one of Lakewood’s public courses. And in the winter the Green Mountain Recreation Center is a great place for indoor recreation.
There is a spectrum of housing options in Green Mountain. “Closer to the city, homes are older and more modest, but as you head toward the mountains, homes get newer and more impressive,” says Jesse Lynch, owner of the Welcome To Denver real estate team. Ranch-style houses built in the 1960s and 1970s are common, and many homes sit on raised lots that terrace down hilly streets. Split-level bungalows framed by the dusty gray silhouette of the mountains rise through hazy morning clouds, and large Craftsman builds with contrasting siding materials provide plenty of room for extended families.
For some residents, the mountain may as well be an extension of their backyard, as trails that cut straight across West Alameda Parkway link cozy cul-de-sacs directly to the ascending, pebbled pathways. “Price-wise, you’re in the middle of the road as it pertains to Lakewood,” Lynch says. While large, five-bedroom homes offer plenty of space, they’re more affordable here than in the Foothills neighborhood to the north, with some 3,000-square-foot properties selling for under $800,000. There are also find townhouse options, including two-bedroom, 1,100-square-foot townhomes with private parking, grounds maintenance and access to a clubhouse with a pool, all within walking distance of the Green Mountain trails.
On the weekends, residents can get a morning latte from Hello Coffee, where flavor combinations like raspberry-coconut and toffee-banana are local favorites. Costere Mexican Restaurant offers sizzling skillets of fajitas and more tasty Mexican menu options. And don’t forget to stop into Great Harvest Bread Company for a fresh-baked loaf of cinnamon chip bread.
Less than a mile from the rec center, young students can attend Devinny Elementary School, which has received an A grade on Niche and has previously been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School with consistent scores above the district average on academic tests. Right next door, B-plus rated Dunstan Middle School promotes healthy habits by implementing yoga into the physical education curriculum. Students who move on to attend Green Mountain High School, which received a B-plus Niche grade, are eligible to apply for the Dunstan Foundation Scholarship, which has supported students since 1997. And with Jefferson County Public Schools’ Choice Enrollment program, students have the option to enroll in any district school they think would be a good fit.
Alameda Parkway makes the rest of Lakewood easily accessible, and commuters are also close to Interstate 70.
