Just steps from Downtown Lancaster, Mussertown is a historic neighborhood that offers all the city convenience without as much hubbub and foot traffic. “Mussertown is one of Lancaster’s oldest neighborhoods – it started as its own separate town,” says Melissa Brosey, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Homesale Realty. This is made clear by the angular layout of the neighborhood, Brosey goes on, “The one thing you really notice, Mussertown was laid out differently, it’s on an angle to the rest of the city.” Mostly residential, it’s a busy neighborhood with rowhomes and townhomes overhanging the sidewalks, usually with small fenced back yards and on-street parking. Numerous multi-family apartment complexes share space with these single-family units. All of this sits blocks from the shops and history at the heart of the Red Rose City.

Housing from a bygone era
“This community was laid out by John Musser Junior dating back to 1760,” Brosey explains, “so some of the homes in Mussertown are the oldest in the city.” The top end of Mussertown is often referred to as ‘Old Town’ by locals, and for good reason: the median build year for homes in this area is 1889. Brick-faced colonial townhouses – some updated with brightly-colored exteriors – are the most common housing style in Mussertown, although a few semi-detached units from the mid-1900s can also be found. Nineteenth century homes featuring modern updates can go for between $125,000 and $225,000, while those with more modern renovations can go for$250,000 to $350,000. Townhouses in the Old Town triangle, many of which offer over 2,000 square feet of living space, will often sell for $400,000 and up. These homes often come with detached garages and limited outdoor spaces beyond a small deck or patio.

Public spaces like Roberto Clemente Park

Combining Puerto Rican and Mexican flavors with a New York flare, El Jibarito Restaurant-Nuyorican offers traditional sandwiches, entrée platters and empanadillas. Right around the corner, El Friquitin de Villalba offers their own versions of these same staples. Mezcla Ice Cream focuses on unique Latin American flavors. “It’s traditional Mexican ice cream, they do traditional flavors, but they also do unique flavors as well, like corn,” says Brosey - just look for the bright blue building with a pink axolotl. Nearby, Downtown Lancaster features artisans and independent retail options, but for everyday needs, residents head to small local corner stores like El Tio Minimarket, Brothers Food Max, or Save A Lot. For groceries, there is also a Wal-Mart Supercenter a few miles to the east

Events reflecting an evolving community
“The Crispus Attucks Community Center is the go-to for events in the neighborhood,” says Brosey, “They do a Martin Luther King breakfast that’s highly attended, they have a Christmas program called Light Up the Southeast, they feed the community.” The center also provides events across Black History Month as well as a Juneteenth Celebration. San Juan Bautista Church puts on an annual Hispanic Festival, while residents head up to Downtown Lancaster in late September to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

School District of Lancaster and its Olympic connection
The Mussertown neighborhood is served by the School District of Lancaster, however students will end up spread across different schools depending on where in the neighborhood they live. Washington, King and Carter and MacRae elementary schools all welcome students, and all receive a grade of C-minus from Niche. Students are also split across Lincoln, Reynolds, and Jackson middle schools – the latter gets a C-minus while the former two get a C grade. McCaskey High School, whose stadium bears the name of Olympic gold medalist and ex-Mussertown resident Barney Ewell, gets a B-minus from Niche. Private schools that serve the area include Lancaster Country Day school for preschool through twelfth grade, Lancaster Catholic High School and its parochial feeder schools like nearby Resurrection Catholic, and La Academia Charter School.

Sitting so close to the center of Lancaster, Mussertown is incredibly convenient to the city. It’s highly walkable and bikeable, and Lancaster’s Red Rose Transit Authority services the neighborhood with numerous routes. Lancaster General Hospital provides emergency medical care, only a mile or so north of the neighborhood – they are also one of the largest employers in the region. Nearby Lancaster Airport, 8 miles north offers limited flight options; instead, most residents will make the 32-mile drive to Harrisburg International Airport.
