Close-knit Lexington neighborhood growing in affluence
The interest in Kenwick went up when those looking for homes with classic character ran into trouble finding options in neighboring and affluent communities like Chevy Chase and Ashland Park. “Now Kenwick has become that area,” says Donna Elder, an associate broker with Re/Max Creative Realty. Although it has fewer million-dollar homes than its two neighbors, Kenwick is known for its charming century-old homes and architecture. Kenwick has an active and close-knit community, too. Children occasionally set up lemonade and cookie stands, while neighbors enjoy mingling at various gatherings. One of those events sees residents break out instruments to entertain the neighborhood from their front porches. On Kenwick, Brandon Carpenter, who co-owns the neighborhood-based Carpenter Collectibles with his brother, says: “There are a lot of older residents that have been there and owned their homes for probably 50 years. Now, it’s got a lot of new, younger folks moving to the area. It’s kind of changing the culture a little bit, but maybe for the good.”

Celebrating the Craftsman bungalow
Many Kenwick homes sit on lots with enough room for small groups of young and mature trees. During the fall, layers of dry leaves blanket several front yards. Although the neighborhood has some architectural variety, Craftsman bungalows make up much of the housing here. In fact, Kenwick hosts a charitable event in June that involves tours of select bungalows in the neighborhood. Other styles seen here include American Four Squares, English Tudor cottages, Cape Cods, brick Colonial Revivals and even some contemporary Craftsmen. The neighborhood’s smaller homes can cost between the upper $100,000s and $300,000. Larger and newer houses at least a few thousand square feet run between $500,000 and $800,000.

A neighborhood staple at the Kenwick Table
The Kenwick Table cafe is a gathering spot for friends and neighbors who want to meet for snacks and coffee. Patrons can socialize outside on the wood patio or relax inside in front of a fireplace. In the nearby Warehouse Block, fans of macaroons and other French pastries can stop by the La Petite Delicat. Epping’s on Eastside serves traditional American fare in an upscale space. Visitors looking for downhome cooking can also walk to the Blue Door Smokehouse. Craft beer fans can order flights and warm artisan pies at Mirror Twin Brewing. Patrons can enjoy their drinks in the beer garden with views of the nearby railroad tracks. The barrels arranged on the taproom’s shelves complement some of the establishment’s rustic decor. While Kroger provides a nearby grocery chain, many in the neighborhood still support Wilson’s Grocery & Meat. “They have some of the best meat in town, and they sell sandwiches,” Elder says about Wilson’s.
