Far Southside
Elm Creek offers new construction and a community pool
While Abilene's growth has traditionally focused on the downtown and northside areas, Far Southside is transforming open farmland into various subdivisions built throughout the 2020s. "I always tell people that if they come here for the military and plan to stay more than two years, they should buy a house," Fulkerson says. Elm Creek is a master-planned community on the west side of Buffalo Gap Road with a pool, splash pad and walking trails. The neighborhood offers traditional and contemporary farmhouse architecture exceeding 1,800 square feet. These houses often include enclosed wooden backyards, covered porticos and side garages. Near U.S. Highway 83, Southridge is a 45-acre subdivision with larger lots. "Southridge is gated, and home prices range from $500,000 to over $1 million. It's an HOA community, but the HOAs here are not typical—they don't offer many amenities," says Robbie Johnson, broker and team lead of Texas Lifestyles Group powered by Epique Realty. She also lives on the south side and has sold houses for over 18 years.Wylie ISD is expanding its STEM programs
Wylie Independent School District serves about 5,000 students, smaller than the 15,000-student Abilene ISD. In 2024, Wylie ISD received $240 million from a bond proposal to renovate its schools. This funding will add classrooms to Wylie High School and expand career and technical education programs. The district is divided into east and west sides. Wylie West Elementary has an A grade. Wylie West Junior High School also has an A. All high school students attend Wylie High School with a B-minus rating. It offers various Career and Technical Education programs.Access to recreation at the Wylie Community Center
Abilene's Far Southside has few dedicated recreational spaces—partly due to the hot climate that keeps many indoors. However, residents still enjoy a few local options. The Abilene Country Club was established in 1921. "We come to the club for dinner several times a week, and it's nice to have a community like this," Johnson says. She is a long-time country club member, and her clients often become members. The club's golf course is split into north and south sections, with the main clubhouse on the north course. Residents of Wylie ISD have access to the Wylie Community Center, known as "The Doghouse," located within Wylie High School. Community donations funded the center, which includes an indoor football field, batting cages and a running track. The Shed is known for its Texas barbecue
Buffalo Gap Road is a major thoroughfare with several shopping centers and small businesses. The Shed is a barbecue restaurant that is so popular it often sells out by 3:00 p.m. Texas Monthly named it one of the state’s top 50 barbecue spots. Cordell's is a locally owned gift shop and café serving chicken salad sandwiches and a selection of olive oils. Also along this road are Dollar General and Dollar Tree, and more retail is coming. "They are putting some shops near Remington Estates," Johnson says. "I never feel like we are too far from anything because we are 15 minutes from Abilene proper." Johnson also notes that The Shops at Abilene is a shopping center near Target and Lowe's, 6 miles away.10 miles to Dyess Air Force Base
Due to ongoing construction, Buffalo Gap Road has been a challenge for residents for the past two years. "It has been an eyesore for a while," Fulkerson says. The project aims to enhance pedestrian access, widen roadways and improve drainage. U.S. Highway 83 runs along the neighborhood's east side with a 5-mile drive to Loop 322, a major city bypass. The area is 10 miles from Dyess Air Force Base, a significant city employer that brings new residents to Abilene. Hendrick Medical Center South is just 2 miles away. Abilene Regional Airport is 10 miles north and offers six daily flights to Dallas. Locals note that it's easy to get through TSA. "We're the maintenance hub for American Eagle, so we have flights coming in and out of Abilene," Johnson says.
