Lake side living in Fort Phantom
More recreation is on the horizon for the shores of Lake Fort Phantom Hill, found 10 miles north of Abilene. The lake is vital for Abilene's water supply and crucial in the region's hot, humid climate and occasional droughts. "It's important to watch our water levels because Abilene is dry. We want to keep it as full as possible," says Robbie Johnson, Realtor and broker at Keller Williams Realty, who sells houses in the area. "The area encompasses Taylor, Callahan and Jones counties. People need to know that because you could be paying higher property taxes depending on where you live on the lake." The reservoir has provided acres for fishing, boating and cottage living for decades. The Lake Phantom Master Plan focuses on developing recreational opportunities. Plans include improving shoreline access, enhancing picnic areas and creating trails for hiking and biking. As these developments continue, the community anticipates the impact on the local quality of life with more to do around the lake.

Fishing and boating is the lifestyle
Johnson Park borders Lake Fort Phantom Hill, offering a playground and picnic area. Anglers fish for blue catfish and white crappie among bulrush and pondweed. Locals rent kayaks and paddle boards to explore the lake's 4,000 acres. Nearby, the Abilene Gun Club, established in the 1940s, provides 20+ acres of shooting ranges, while the Abilene Sailing Association offers a private boat ramp and beach. The historic Texas Forts Trail is part of a 650-mile highway stretch through West Texas that includes remnants of an 1850s fort with stone structures like the powder magazine and guardhouse.

Water fronted cottages and new construction
Many homes enjoy direct lakeside access in their backyards. Most homes overlook Lake Fort Phantom Hill, surrounded by star grass and mesquite trees along the reservoir's shores and backyard spaces. The streets of Fort Phantom feature cozy lakeside cottages and rustic ranch-style houses with weathered board-and-batten siding. These homes range from modest half-acre lots to sprawling 10-acre properties, priced between $130,000 and $230,000. "There is a masterplan going on. There were five subdivisions constructed to help market it. Some homes were developed on the water on acre lots," Johnson says. Houses constructed in the 1950s and 1960s have been lovingly maintained, while others have been rebuilt.

Military students are supported at Abeline ISD
Families with kids consider their home location before settling down. "Because the community is split between three different counties, the school district depends on where people live," Fulkerson says. Abilene Independent School District in Taylor County gets a B-grade on Niche and actively supports its military-connected students. Clyde Consolidated Independent School District has a B-minus along with Hawley Independent School District. All three offer career and technical education programs in business and STEM careers. Students a part of Abilene Independent School District may attend Austin Elementary School, highly rated with an A-minus ranking or Stafford Middle School with a B-minus. Middle Schoolers may attend either Craig Middle School or Mann Middle School, both earning a B-minus and Abilene High School gets a B-plus.
